How can I identify an om616 or om617 5 speed? - NapaBavarian - 02-09-2011

I'm looking for a 5 speed for my 82 300sd, I've seen a couple 5 speeds from various cars, either the super rare US 240d 5 speed or a European market 5 speed, how can I make sure I'm not getting my chain yanked?

The start hole for the 616 or 617 diesel's are on the RH side

all of The gas ones are on the LH side and all newer diesels 601,602,603 are on the LH side

Step one: Look at shifter. No 5? Bye.

Step two, crawl under and look at it. The trans code is etched on the side, and it's also a good 4 inches or so longer than a 4 speed.

Make sure the seller isn't cheating by counting reverse as a speed.

Thanks, I thought I had one, but seller called it a 5 speed because it was a stick shift Angry

I will likely be buying sight unseen, so a little more difficult, if I could find something from a gas car I could scour the junkyards, or perhaps I could use a 4 speed with a Laycock de Normanville OD from an old Volvo.

A 4+1 would be sweet. I never thought of that.

Incorrect. The 250 I believe was on the correct side to as well as some 280s. Its been a long time since I looked for one so my memory is hazy, but the info is out there. Long and short of it is that you can have one for about $1-1.5k

Incorrect. Only the 280 has a compatible bell pattern. The 200, 230 (both of them), 250 and V8 engines are all left starter.
