Installing a turbo oil feed on a 617 n/a - THE DIGGER - 09-07-2011
As it says in the title whats the best way to supply oil the a turbo when fitting one to a 617 n/a?
The way ive done it so far is with a t-piece on the oil warning light switch on the back of the oil filter housing,

The problem I seem to be having with this is when the engine gets very hot the oil pressure drops so that at idle the oil light comes on, my thinking on this is because theres a t-piece on the pressure switch its reading low?
Any one any ideas?
617 n/a and 617a oil filter housing are different to allow for turbo feed, any one know what stt and the like done for a turbo oil supply?

Would a restriction on the turbo line help? What pressure is that sensor set to go off at anyways, maybe you can change that out.

The rear plate on the oil filter housing unbolts
bolt up a turbo one from a 300d turbo and it good to go at least that's what I did on my 240d turbo
I actually replace the whole oil filter housing before I realized the only difference was the rear plate on it

theres a 2mm one in the turbo line already.
I think its around 20psi, dont really want to put a lower one in case there ever is a low pressure problem.

Was this on a 617 engine?
from the epc the shape of the rear plate on the turbo oil filter housing is completly different, and the gasket is a different part no.

So why not get a whole 300SD oil filter housing?
Also, if the pressure sensor's that sensitive I wouldn't be surprised if it set off on factory turbo 617, I'm sure I've seen less than 1.4 bar before.

If i could get a turbo oil filter housing I would but 617a's are thin on the ground in Europe, and non existence in Ireland.
Ran the engine up to temp again this weekend to iron out the bugs in my hydraulic winch set up, no oil light issues
Unplugged the fan and with the engine nearly in the red im still seeing around 1.4 bar oil pressure at idle and the oil light didnt come on this time....confused as I hadn't changed anything from last weekend.

I swapped a the oil filter housing and backing plate off of a turbo 617 on to a non turbo 616
After doing the swap I realized that the oil filter housings where identical with the same part number and I could have just swapped the back plate and gasket.

The "NA" filter housing you show is the same as the turbo ones here. I will be happy to send you a turbo housing back part.

I assume you want a 300sd cover plate, not a 300d one.

The 300SD one has a fitting for an electric oil pressure sensor, the 300D has a fitting for a oil line for the manual oil pressure gauge.

Thanks for that, are they both turbo? And if so do they both have the threaded hole for the banjo bolt to feed the turbo?

Yep they'd both have it. 82+ 300D and 81+ 300SD had turbos.

After doing a bit of research on the russian epc both 116 300sd and a 123 300d show the same cove plate part no 6171840308.
Only for a 300d theres no pressure switch listed but there is an oil line listed for it, going to the pressure gauge..... and vise versa for the 300sd.
