Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 09-20-2011

Hi
I have finally started my new project. It is going to be a Ford Transit(German) 1980 2.4 diesel with ca 65hp. I have always been a ford enthusiast but unfortunately they don,t make any quality diesel engines. Since I am also a Mercedes enthusiast, I have decided that I am going to put a E300 TD 606.920 engine in it. I consider that the best engine Mercedes have ever made.

I bought the car in the north of Norway and the shortest way back home to the south part was trough Finland and Sweden. the trip took me 3 days each wayShy

Here is the original engine

Now it is goneSmile

With some cutting, it looks like the 606 is going to fitBig Grin

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 09-21-2011

I am planning too use a Roush supercharger so I am going to need more fuel.

Here is the standard electronically controlled injection pump still installed. I don't like electronics that much so it has to go.

This is the new pump I am going to use, 603 TD IP with Tomniks 7.5 mm floyd elements and larger delivery valves. PP diesel in Finland did the pump modifying job and I am very happy with their serviceSmile

This is the Roush supercharger. Got it for a good price on Ebay, but it is still in USA so I have to go there this winter to pick it up.

Very cool project! Big Grin My dad had a few of these Transits some years ago, not too quick as stock. I have followed one finnish Transit-project, he still has stock York engine. With Holset HY40V and 140cc inline pump Big Grin Waiting for results of both projects now!

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 09-21-2011

Thank you MJF for that infoSmile
No work on the Transit now, I am trying to learn how to weld aluminum with Oxy and acetylene. it is very difficultHuh Maybe I will ask a friend to weld the aluminum or buy a TIG.

Here are a few more photos: http://s1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee513/erling66/Ford%20Transit%201980%20%20Mercedes%20606/

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - yankneck696 - 09-21-2011

Please buy a TIG or a spool gun for a MIG.... Much better results all around. TIG gives less distortion & leads to less final machining.

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - winmutt - 09-23-2011

Where in US are you going? Perhaps we can arrange Mercedes Taxi service Big Grin

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 09-28-2011

Thanks for invitation Winmutt, but I think a trip from LA to Atlanta will be long, even in a Mercedes TaxiSmile I normally visit California on my trips, I like the climate and scenery.
I just started the engine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lix5pRuxzbk
Everything works fine and I am very happy with the pump from PP diesel(Finland) The engine idles fine and the exhaust pressure is equal and has the same temperature at each cylinder. I think that is a quite good indicator that the pump is well adjusted for timing and fuel amount on each cylinder.

Can't wait to see this in action

What? when you are in CA, just pick up a nice 7.3 Navistar/Ford diesel V8.

only 800-1000 lbs, you should be able to take it back as carry on luggage. Smile

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 10-06-2011

Yes I know that the 7.3 ford V8 diesel engine is great but I believe that International Harvester made that engine. Same situation with Dodge, the use Cummins engines and Chevy use Isuzu engines now.

Some update: I just mounted the 606 na manifolds. It may seams strange that I take off the turbo, but I will try the engine first with the supercharger only. Maybe I will combine it with a turbo later. The stock turbo and manifold is too small anyway so off it goesBig Grin

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - JB3 - 10-06-2011

navistar = international harvester Big Grin

what is the rust situation on that van? it looks very clean! Are there any clearance issues with the steering mechanism?

In Norway we have winter almost half of the year so lots of cars are very rusty after ca 15 years. Luckily this car has been taken well care of so it has very little rust.
I will fabricate a new intake manifold so I will have clearance enough. But there is a steering rod(don't know the right English word) going from left to right side that I will have to modify so it will fit the engine oil tray.

Yeah, I was thinking that thing looked fantastic sourced out of such a harsh rust environment. Great find!

The steering bars are called in the US the drag link, center link, and tie rods. Whats the name for them there?

I will be encountering the same problem on my van/engine swap, in addition to the steering bars, I will also have a problem with the front sway bar on mine.
Im looking forward to seeing how you resolve this, I was also considering modifying the steering bars, as the engine may not fit otherwise, and I won't be able to easily change the oil.

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 11-19-2011

I just got a 300E(gasoline) clutch. It is 240mm diameter so I will try it and see how long it will last. I couldn't find a 300E flywheel so I used a 250D 602 FW and machined it up to the 240mm disc. I think they will work together ok. Next problem is to make the 6 speed transmission fit since it has the shorter axle. I am planning to shorten the transmission housing.

Thanks everyone for great links to other Transits.
Dropnosky; I will post photos of the steering mod when I start with it.

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - willbhere4u - 11-19-2011

I got my solid mass flywheel from sprinter and and it is set up for the shorter input shaft it was designed to replace the dule mass Flywheel I found it on eBay in Europe it is 240mm I think?

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 12-04-2011

I started the shortening of my 6 speed. I made some measuring device so I would be sure to get everything straight. Now it slides easily in and out of the bearing.

I could even adjust the disc with the transmissionSmile

Next thing: weld it

I have similar project with w124. My supercharger is AMG S55 twinsqrew. I have also thought that I will try that engine with supercharger only at first. I'm very curious about how your car will work. Just waiting for some more pics and specs. Good luck with your project. May the Force be with you Rolleyes

An OM606 with just a Eaton M90 and a good dieselpump is a good comboSmile I have one in my dailydriverWink Is around 180hp now...No turbo lag, just great power! And i must say, this project Erling, is one good projectWink

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 01-05-2012

The clutch is in place and the box is welded and mounted on the engineSmile Everything seams fine so far but the real test will come when I start to drive it.
I can not have the gear shifter at that location(it will be behind me so I have to move it ca 40 cm forward.
Now I am ready to install the engine and transmission. Find out where I want it, and make engine mounts.
Sometimes I say to myself: Why did I start this project? It is a never ending projectConfused But if I don't give up, I will have a faaaaast diesel supervanBig Grin

How many cut out of the boxhousing? Dont fit the box 1to1 on the engine? Is this korrekt, u only cut it because the singlemass flyweel? If u have dual it fit in the bearing from shaft.

Hi
I cut out 2 cm. The box fit the engine but the shaft is too short since it is made for a dual mass FW. I don't like the dual mass FW. heavy and I don't think it will hold the extra torque. So with the regular single mass FW that is slimmer, I decided to shorten the box. Lots of job, but a less expensive solution than to buy a custom FW.

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - hansebanger77 - 01-11-2012

Thx is this now 716 361? I could get a 716 604 ore 654 dont know it can hold the power longer than 5 speed

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 02-05-2012

I have finally decided where to put the engine. Up, down, forward, backward and tilting of the engine, many things to consider. And I have made transmission and engine mounts. It is the first time I have welded aluminum, so they are not pretty but hopefully strong enough Smile The good thing about putting the engine in a van is that you have lots of space on the sides and on top of the engine for turbo, supercharger, intercooler and tubing. But first I will make the hydraulic clutch, gear shifter and propeller shaft.

Sweet sweet sweet! I love the transmission cross-member. Nice!

Also I hope the engine mounts will hold... mostly because I'm not a huge fan of supports on an angle - i.e. which don't "rest" directly ON the mounts.

Keep us posted and keep it up!

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 02-23-2012

I just finished the clutch installation and it works fine with a medium soft pedal. I used a master cylinder from a w124 250d and connected it to the throwout bearing cylinder that came with the 6 speed box.
On 29'th of Feb I am going to California so I have a few questions to the members that live there: Are there going to be any drag race with diesel cars the next 2 weeks? And I am planning to buy a 300sd 1981-1983 with no rust and nice leather interior(not blue or tan), anyone has one for sale? PM me.

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 04-01-2012

I made a propeller shaft with parts from the W210 E300 automatic. I cut off the back and welded it to the transit shaft. Hope it will work fine? As you can see, I don't care about finish now, probably many things will have to be modified and when everything works, then it is time to try to make it look goodSmile
[Image: DSC00368.jpg][Image: P3310003.jpg]
Now I have started to install the supercharger, I think I found a good place for it

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 04-20-2012

I have started to make the intake. The stock didn't fit in the car but I didn't like it any way so It had to be modifiedSmile I hope the new intake will flow equally well on all cylinders. I haven't decided yet if it will be a single or dual plenum. Maybe I will try to flow test it before it is finish.

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - erling66 - 12-11-2012

I have finally started to work on my Transit/mercedes project againSmile
The 6 speed box came with the original shifter but I could not put it in the position it was meant to be. The Transit has no tunnel and there is a seat in the center of the car so the shifter had to be moved up and to the side. That meant some modifications with new linkage. Here are a few photos with what I made. It works ok but I need to drive the car to see if it needs further modification so I will wait with finishing touch.

I know rust makes the car faster, less weightTongue but still, I don't like it so it has to go. So Now the car will be stripped down, sand basted, welded and painted everywhere. Lots of job, but I will do everything myself so it will not be so expensiveSmile

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - Simpler=Better - 02-17-2013

Gah!!! Shouldn't be too bad, just time consuming. I like the radiator and new intake. This makes me want to supercharge a motor Smile

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - willbhere4u - 02-17-2013

I got an aftermarket fly wheel for a sprinter that is a single mass flywheel designed to replace the duel mass flywheel so it fits the stock transmission with out shortening it. It also a 9.5 inch disc!

I found it in the U.K. there are some pics half way down this page

RE: Ford Transit 1980 with a supercharged Mercedes 606 - Druk - 02-17-2013

Interesting conversion. I went the opposite way in a past life maybe 15 or so years ago. Took the slightly later Transit 2.5Di engine and Laycock overdrive box and slotted it into a Volvo 240 estate. No turbo on that engine at the time but it went very well and pulled a heavy caravan all over Europe. It did about 40 (UK) mpg.
