90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 09-29-2011

5 speed high output V6 taurus. 900 bucks and oddball ford ground effects. Im looking for a winter car, anyone ever owned one of these? Originally I wanted something with some fuel economy, but now id like something with a little more power.

did that have a yamaha engine or something? a friend had one of that era and loved it

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 09-29-2011

yeah, wikipedia says its a 220hp yamaha V6 with a car top speed of 146 mph, just what you need for winter driving. Big Grin

Reviews show that the engine is apparently reliable, and the rest of the car is a taurus, so cheap and plentiful parts. I did read a few reviews stating that engine parts were hard to get, being the limited production yamaha power plant.

waffling right now as I also found a TDI passat 5-speed for sale which would be great. Problem with the TDI passat is that the owner seems difficult and non responsive, whereas the taurus is at a lot looking to be unloaded.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - yankneck696 - 09-30-2011

It's a very quick car. We stuffed the engine/trans in an escort when I worked auto salvage. WOW !!! That was a speed demon.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 09-30-2011

well, was a waste of time driving by. Guy had it listed on craigslist for two whole days before he had it crushed. Tells me he's getting multiple calls on it, and of course what kind of idiot lists a car for sale on a tuesday, lets it sit for the mid week, and crushes it before the weekend when people have spare time to look at those types of cars at that kind of price?

No wonder "Looney Tunes Auto" (actual name) is a ratty little hell hole.

Shame, waste of a decent and rare car.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 10-04-2011

found a better winter ride-

1987 VW quantum wagon with the 5-speed mated to an Audi 5cyl. Surprisingly clean, some accident damage and a bearing issue on the passenger front, but overall pretty nice.

Should be great for skiing and winter road trips, seems made for that. Best part is that there are adapters apparently available to mate a 1.6 diesel to this trans. Have to do more research on that, but its apparently been done

Soooo you've got the early 1.8 gas engine?

They're not bad... just thirsty (IMHO)

I think according to some sales literature that its a 2.2 litre. But boy are you right about the fuel economy, I have the original window sticker- 19mpg town, 24mpg highway

thats only slightly better than my work van. Ill go over the winter, but ill assimilate info in the meantime on possible diesel swaps

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - vstef_is - 10-05-2011

Ah right, for the US it was the 2.2, plus the 1.8 might have come a bit later... first seen in the Audi A4/B4.

Anywho, I think this should be your car - http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/2284.shtml

yeah, thats not good. Big Grin Even worse than the misleading window sticker I have in the car paperwork

Methinks that the 1.6 diesel needs to fly into this car at some point

Its up and running now, pretty peppy little wagon. Can't believe that the kid I bought it off of sat on this car for two years for want of 6 inches of exhaust pipe, and a front right wheel bearing. Even has newish expensive tires on it.
check out this engine bay. The entire 5cyl is actually forward of the front tires. Never seen a car with the engine so far forward. It will be interesting to see what kind of handling this weight location creates. They crammed the radiator over on the driver side to fit

God forbid you give someone a love tap in traffic. The front of the engine is less than 7 inches from the absolute front of the car. If it even deforms a half inch, it'll touch. This thing can take no damage up here, guess I won't be running down any hippies this winter.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - yankneck696 - 10-08-2011

Those Vws were great for enduro racing with the radiator over there. We used the 4 cyls & they had alot more room in the front of the engine. You could never damage the radiator with it's placement.

update on this quantum-

I LOVE this car. Ive fixed all the BS problems, and it has a really nice note to it stock, is fun to drive, and I already have a potential turbo coming for the 5cyl out of an audi 5000.

Too bad there are so few of the things around, impossible to find the rear and front wagon specific bumpers I need to make it really nice.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 01-06-2012

ok, having a crisis here. Big Grin

There is ANOTHER SHO Taurus 5-speed on craigslist today. This one a 1991.

I have ended up taking the head off the quantum to fix a bunch of broken off exhaust manifold studs. Im considering putting it all back together, and grabbing this taurus.

One one hand, I should stop looking at craigslist. On the other, parts for the quantum have been pretty hard to find, and while incredibly fun to drive, does not have the rear passenger space I was hoping for, now that ive fixed it up pretty decent, might be a perfect time to sell it for 1800 to 2 grand.

I hate looking on craigslist, but i do it everyday.
Soooo many cool projects and odd cars.

Uh oh, there's a 3rd SHO 5-speed now. Yesterday morning checked out a 1991 model, black on black, been in storage for years. First gen body style which I like more from the sleeper perspective. Rusty, and will need serious maintenance. The guy claimed all kinds of wonderful things, but when I showed up, couldn't even get it started.

Today, I will look at a 1992 model, which is a gen 2 body style, and should have the updated rod shiter vs cable. Both of them are cheap, I'm taking it as a sign from the gods that I need to own one of these cars since I'm being given ample opportunity.

I personally prefer the gen 1 body style, but this one I'm going to look at today supposedly has had a ton of maintenance done and is immediately drivabe/inspected. It is green on gray

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 01-08-2012

yup, I own the 1992. Fortunately, its only money. Big Grin

Missing some cosmetics and has a few small ugliness issues, first of all being its that 90s ford dark green, which never ages well on any car. The guy I got it off of is a ford tech, just re did tons of stuff, was showing me on a lift. Even has nice police car tires on it. (his shop services local cop cars, and the tires are the same size.)

Glad I went with the rod based shifter gen 2 version vs the cable gen 1 version, way tighter and smoother feeling.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - Snipe656 - 01-09-2012

Those old SHO cars routinely are raced in the 24 Hours of Lemons and have their fair share of breakdowns. I have always wondered why they can be found for so cheap but guess at the end of the day it is still a Taurus just with some fancy parts.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 01-10-2012

24 hour review. This thing is FAST, very surprising turn of speed, especially on the top end. Flys on the highway. I have to fix the cruise control, or I will be getting another SR-22

Interestingly, the vw wagon has a better exhaust note for half the hp, and the general feeling between them is more refinement from the VW, and agressive courseness from the SHO. Gonna stick with the SHO for a DD though, bigger and more comfortable for me, twice as powerful, and better fuel economy.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 01-11-2012

Well, I already have a speeding ticket. 20mph over, not going to be cheap.

I once saw a lotus esprit with one of these engines stuffed in the back in placer of the 4cyl turbo

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 01-15-2012

I have officially put more miles on this SHO in one week, than in 4 months on the quantum wagon, so ill definitely be selling that wagon.

Yesterday, the SHO went to northern VT for some winter fun.

Im going to make some improvements to it, basically put some stuff back to stock. The airbox needs to go back in with the stock paper filter and baffles, and ill be ripping out that clogged K&N. I don't know if anyone else has this experience, but the K&N gauze filter sucks in salt and road dirt conditions, its extremely likely to surface clog in anything but a perfect environment. Started to clog up on the trip back from skiing with road salt.

Also, I need to grab some winter tires. Im running 4 former police car tires, all at 20%. Might as well be racing slicks. Friend of mine has a source for used police crown vic tires, which work on this car. If a police cruiser gets a flat or a nail, they replace it with a new tire as policy. The shop techs patch the police tires which can be properly patched, and run them on their own cars, so I got a set of 4 from one of these guys for real cheap, since they are free to the techs, and they are expensive, quality tires as you can imagine for police use

Why new england cars rust out-

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - Snipe656 - 01-15-2012

Personally I think the K&N filters suck in most environments. I stay away from them these days and just use good/clean paper filters.

Torch, sawzall, mig, angle iron, removal of inner fenders, hybrid CV axles (the hardest part) & alot of beer... When you work at a salvage yard & have free access to all the parts you want, you start with a dumb idea & then do your best to make it happen. If it doesn't work, re-inventory the parts & crush the rest... It was a fun job...

Maybe ill try it later on, I loved my old 91 escort GT, would be something else with above 200hp. What did you end up doing with that car? did you use the SHO 5-speed, or adapt the escort 5-speed?

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - yankneck696 - 01-18-2012

We used the SHO engine, trans & a hybrid cradle. The axles were 3 nights of messing with CV axles & joints to make them short enough, CVs tight enough & splines engage on both ends. I doubt anyone could do it without a salvage yard at their disposal. The car ended up in apoliceimpound due to a drunk employee taking it for a joyride.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - JB3 - 01-24-2012

2nd ticket. 10 over. Yup, ill be going back to diesels, getting these two tickets has ****ed up my umbrella insurance policy on my rental property, I no longer qualify, which is pretty unacceptable.

I have just demonstrated that I simply cannot own a car with lots of base power and not speed in it. Time to sell the SHO and bust out the 50hp Jetta.

RE: 90 taurus SHO available locally, should I buy it? - DeliveryValve - 01-24-2012

Dude that sucks. Is there anyway to remove a ticket? Here in Cali you can go to traffic school and a ticket will be forgiven provided you didn't already go to traffic school within 18 months between tickets.

lol, I deserved every penny of these two tickets. Big Grin

First one was a WOT event passing a pickup that kept accelerating to match speed, and of course I had to try and smoke him right past a cop, sencond was I was coming down a hill in 3rd roaring 10 over, and flew by a cop sitting behind a shed or small building.

.

Im talking to my lawyer, selling the SHO will remove the temptation, and we will see what kind of reduction on the tickets I can get, but I immediately reverted to a 17 year old kid in this car, so it has to go! Tongue

The insurance policy loss does create a problem though. However, it is an umbrella policy, so I still have regular properly insurance and now an increased rate, just not this nice extra insurance.

annnnnnnd #3. (van though, seems impossible, but the van was clocked at 75)

3 in a month! im on a role!

SHO is sold thankfully, buyer gave me a wad of low denomination cash and a free voucher for a local strip club. I love craigslist. Big Grin

(02-14-2012, 04:47 PM)sassparilla_kid Was it the same cop lol?

first two in my state, last one was in upstate NY. However, I have a suspicion that its the same cop who gave me a ticket about 4 years ago in the same area of the same county. Name seems very familiar, I have to check my files.

Fortunately for me, it was out of state. I should be able to pay my way out of this hole. Were this NY state, id have 10 points by now. 11 and you lose your license. They whack you with penalties after 5 or 6 I think, been a while since I had to do that research.

RI does not have a point system, but are more likely to throw the book at you sooner than when other states add points. Just gonna lie low and drive my 1.6 50hp jetta. Ill keep it to safety violations for a few years.

Don't know what got into to me, or maybe my speeding luck ran out this last month. This is some stupid shit to get into. Big Grin

Exactly the same shit I did as a 17 year old that got me into trouble back then
