'79 300TD transmission questions - Robert_UAH - 03-20-2012

I was wondering what the transmission in a '79 300TD is. 722.x? Is this the same as the automatic behind the 617 turbo diesels or were there different variations used over the years of the W123? Also on the 240D manual swap what kinda of power will that box take?

The 79 would have a 722.1. The turbo 123s got the 722.3, probably just by coincidence, I'm pretty sure the 79 turbo SD had a 722.1.

Not sure how much power the manual boxes take, there are reports of the 5-speed ones (same design) eventually breaking with 350hp. So the cutoff point is somewhere below that.

I end up finding a running OM617 turbo diesel without a transmission will the stock one live behind it. I was seeing a rating of 180lb*ft and that is what that motor is rated at before adjusting the pump.
