Compound OM603 - W126Lover - 07-09-2012

Im trying to go compound on my OM603. BIG laggy turbo is bad for city driving especially in California summers. Im looking for a turbo that would spool alot faster than stock, i think it would be fine if at 3500 rpm it would be spooled to the max thats where my hx40 can start working. i was looking into Holset hx27 cant find out much about it. has anyone tried the hx27? or does anyone know a better turbo?

I've thought about compounding an HX25 and an HX40. In theory it would work well (my opinion) but bench racing and actually putting it together may have different results. ForcedInduction currently uses an HE221W which is essentially the same as an HX27. He claims it spools around 2400 on the OM617.

If you use R2S turbo from BMW 535D full boost from 1000rpm and 300HP topp power is easy
Borg warner turbos KP39 and K27, if you going for compound the size need to be quite different, hard part is flapper valve etc. But you need to know what your are doing for controlling flapper valve and bypass valve HP turbo is not that hard to make over rpm

What about compounding a small VNT? a 2056 or 2256 should be able to keep up until 3k

gtb2056vl has a nice map used it ages ago on my first projekt with D24TIC witch worked nice though the engine did not last that long with 3 bars of boost but that is a different story. I am working on one projekt with GTB2056vl as HP and looking at if a GT4202v or 4208V vnt mecanism can be fited on a GTX4294R/gtx4202R for LP turbo

You and I are on the same page. I was thinking of that exact setup. Cool

Hx25 was my first thought but then i thought the T25 exhaust housing would be very restrictive. now im thinking it wont matter much with 60mm wastegate to bypass the hx25 when the hx40 starts to build pressure. VNT turbos sound like a good idea but also seems like alot of work and take up space. Dose anyone has suggestions what to use for a bypass for the hx40 on the compressor side. im thinking of using 2.5' pipes for the plumbing.

So I'm not the only crazy one Big Grin

I think forced spread a little too much disinformation about how "compounds are obsolete." I see potential with them

On a Dodge Cummins forum I read (now that I have one) "Crazy Carl" used 2 HY35s feeding into 1 HY35. The HY35 is the factory turbo on the truck. Perfect 2:1 pressure ratios & ran great for him.
He's also done compounds & a blower for the low end.
