re-ring a 606 possible? - Geezer - 08-26-2012

Hi guys, just wondering if it's a DIY type job. I've tried searching but couldn't find any specifics in terms of the 606. I'm probably going to have to pull my head in a few months and I'd love to freshen up as much of the bottom end as possible while I'm in there, with in reason.
Thanks
Samson

Do a compression test to see if it's worth bothering with. Also you'd have to pull the engine to do this, since you have to drop the pan along with pulling the head.

It's a lot of work. at least pulling the oil pan and cylinder head off. You probably have to pull the engine to get the lower oil pan off. And then you have to check the cylinder boars and make sure they are are not damaged also.

I would first run a a compression and leak down test just to make sure it needs rings!

I never realized you are also in Colorado!

Its a simple enough job IF you know your way around an engine. Personally I wouldn't attempt to do it with the engine still in the car even if you can get the sump off. If you get grit or dirt in there while its apart it will do a lot of damage. If you go for it you will have to also factor in getting the bores honed/glaze busted if you don't do that your new rings will never bed in and you will be in a worse position than having worn rings.
