Oil Pressure, RPM - 87Bielenberg - 09-17-2012

Just did an oil change and now Im noticing the oil pressure gauge is acting differently. The dipstick reads the same, half between min and max. Before it read 3 with my foot on the gas and as soon as I let off it would drop to 2.5 and stay there even at idle. Now it shows 3 with gas and when I let off.
If I slow to a stop it reads 2. Strange? Whats it supposed to read?

Also: I just turned the ALDA up 3/4 turn and the RPM at idle in gear now shows 9. It used to show 5?

The oil pressure when warm is directly related to rpm. So now you have 900rpm idle for some reason, so of course the oil pressure is also reading higher at idle.

I think it is sticking throttle linkage keeping the rpm up, which is not really ALDA related.

Whats the normal RPM at idle in gear? Just a little above 500? Would spraying some lube on the throttle linkage help?

Should be around 700. I would see if anything got jammed in the linkage.

2 bar is still normal amount. When it goes under 1 bar it isn't good anymore. Rpm affects of course and engine temp too. Oil temperature affects even more. If you drive 50 miles oil pressure won't be as high as when you drive just 5 miles Big Grin

Adjusting ALDA won't affect on rpm's.

By the way did you put in same kind of oil which there was before?

Same Oil: 15W-40

The RPM seems to be normal now at around 700 at idle, 1100 driving slow, and 2000 accelerating

The oil pressure still reads 3 all the time though, I just thought it was odd.

BTW: Sometimes my dipstick shows different levels like in a row. I always wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back after running and leave the dipstick there for a few seconds...

My guess is, it's something to do with first use of the fresh oil filter. The same thing happens on my '85 300D, first thing after an oil-and-filter change. It doesn't last very long though. I've never bothered to time exactly how long the unusually high oil pressure lasts, but it's less than twenty minutes or twenty miles. I have observed it to last longer with a Wix filter than with a Mann, but wasn't careful to note the air temperature at each change. Maybe air temperature has more to do with it than brand of filter.
