W123 OM606 conversion - w123star - 09-21-2012

[attachment=5864][attachment=5864]     Finally got started on my dream projectDodgy, OM606 in my W123 sedan.
Dreams started with a OM603 turbo engine that I bought 5 years ago, but as it was possible to buy a W210 donor car in the UK I did so last year. I have been collecting other builders experiences.... I knew it was possible, but havent found anyone using the original w210 auto trans in the W123, so didnt know if I would have problems fitting driveshaft and so on....

Goal: To build a relatively powerful smootly running classic, economical but also able to surprise the young BMW guysCool in the traffic lights.
I want the car to look standard except for loweringAngel.... and 16" inch alloys which I have disguised with the stainless MB wheelcaps 14" that fits perfectly in the rim.

You take:
1 W123 300d automatic 1978.
1 1998 w210 E300 turbodiesel------->
OM606, 150 kmiles on the clock
OM603 IP, converted to 6mm plungers from Electronic IP Dieselmeken....
Gearboxcontroller supplyed by danish Ole FejerIdea
Enginemounts from W126 300SE + adaptorplates to set the enginemounts 30mm closer to flywheel end and 40mm thick in right side and 18mm thick left side.
Driveshaft is now delivered to my 77 year old fatherHeart, to be extended with 60mm and the end from w210 that fits the gearbox.
Gearbox support build together of the w123 original, and the middle part from w210 support.
Differential is from a early W126 500SE, ratio 2,61 : 1.... I expect this ratio to make a real differnce to the noise and economy....

IdeaChallenges:
Speedo ???? I got a output signal from the gearboxcontroller, but a mechanical speedo in the dashboard.... wath to do? Ofcourse Ive got the digital display on the controller, but would like the display hidden...

The 81 300TD had an electronic speedo like the w126. You could swap that in and hopefully the signal output could be hooked to it.

Waoow Smile really? Ive got a US 300 DT in the backyard, gonna check it out straight away.... THANKS!! Of course the signal can the converted to what the speedo needs!!
Idea

Hmmm... didnt have one myself, if you are sure about it, I know what way to go though... have taken several W123 apart in my time, and never seen one without cable.... maybe it is a US thing?
Regards and thanks
Jens

81-only TD, not DT.

Hi
Does anybody know the exact signal for that speedo.
How many pulses/miles or pulses/km
i can supply 0-5V square signal
But what does the speedo need ?
It would be easy to change the 5V externally to any voltage, the speedo needs.

I don't know anything about the speedo, but I do know that member 'CRD4X4' has an 81' dash sitting around from his parts car.

Perhaps a W126 speedometer, connected to the transmission's sending unit through a Dakota Digital SGI-5 Universal Speedometer Signal Interface?

more info on the wheels. the 16's look on the car much better then the 14's

I think so.... The rims are Borbet A, ET 30, 7½ x 16", important is that you find a rim that has a fairly square middle, and has enough material to fit at least 2 schrews (5mm) through the cap. Important is ofcourse also that the depht of the rim is right.
My plan is to paint the rim edge white, and the drive-by-look, will be close to white tyre sides.
I use spacers, 20mm rear and 10 mm front.

Thanks a lot for your reply, I will try to find a speedo from a 81 300 TD or fit a W126 speedo in the w123 cluster. I Guess it is connected to the ABS sensors somehow?
Cheers

Thanks a lot for your input, as I am situated in Denmark, I think I will try to find a W126 speedo local.... Otherwise I will contact CRD4X4 THANKS!! :-D

The 126 and 81 wagon have an electrical pickup on the back of the transmission.

I don't know, I have not yet installed an electronic speedometer (though I will need to, eventually). I simply saw the DD SGI-5 mentioned elsewhere and thought it might be useful.

RE: W123 OM606 conversion - w123star - 09-27-2012

Again, thanks for sharing your knowledge, as I have the speed signal from Ole Fejer's Gearbox controller, I think I will go for researcing what pulssignal is used for w126 speedo, and convert the available signal to the speedo signal, via a conversion box. I know a guy who used standard signal converters from danish PR-electronics, converting gearbox sinus-shape signal to 4-20mA to another converter converting from 4-20mA to a square-shaped signal to the speedo (Rover 3500)
The PR-electronic moduls are available just around the corner for me, and cheaper than the Dakota box.
Cheers
Jens

RE: W123 OM606 conversion - w123star - 09-30-2012

Information on electronic speedo system has been hard to find, but found this today:

http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/outside/11883/PROGRAM/Chassis/54-252.pdf

I have found a w126 speedo from a 380 SE that has same diff. ratio as my back end.
I have found out that the speed sensor in the W126 gearbox has 4 pulses/turn.
Now the challenge is passed to Ole Fejer, who I hope knows what amplitude and shape the puls from a inductiv sensor has, and hopefully we can use the 5 V output from his controller....
