Anyone Supercharged the OM617.9XX Engine - Greazzer - 09-28-2012

Howdy one and all,

Anyone out there supercharged the OM617.9XX N/A Engine (The non-turbo version) ?

Any info would be super appreciated -- EG Heat generated by supercharger, et cet. The NA version had the "M" pump (I think).

Post your thoughts please.

Thanks !

I put a M90 on my 616 a couple of years ago. Took if off after about 1 week lol. Too much noise.

If I were to do another one, I would definitely intercool it and put a bypass valve in it to regulate boost to throttle demand.

I am not a turbo fan at all, but that is based on my experience with them on gas engines, where I like the blower for better. Having the VNT turbo on the 616 now, I must say that IMOP, a properly sized turbo is best pared with the diesel engine.

Hey,

Did you notice anything negative or adverse ? (excluding noise)

Any perfomance to speak of ?

Do you think it would produce too much heat for the NA engine ?

Roots superchargers have low adiabatic efficiency. Lower than any other SC. The screw chargers (whipple, etc..) share the advantage of positive displacement with roots blowers but are much more efficient with heat.

I agree with OM616, turbos are best. They have a huge thermodynamic advantage over superchargers in that they harness waste heat that would normally go straight out of the exhaust. The only exception would be cases where the platform has serious gearing issues, like a wide ratio 3 speed manual trans.

Let me give some more information.

OM617.9X N/A engine which I know is more of a pain in the butt to convert to a diesel engine than what its worth vs. just getting a turbo engine. I have a mod'd M pump so I got plenty of fuel. Just looking to see if getting a Vortech SC would be worth it, in that

1. Will it work ,eg., not destroy the engine
2. Will it provide some performance or just be a waste

Please weigh in because I might be stumbling into a NA engine shortly and my real project might be delayed. Thanks.

The NAs have a different cam. Also the crank isn't hardened, there are no oil squirters, and and the exhaust valves on the turbos are sodium filled

So yeah, just watch your egts and you're fine assuming you have more fuel.

Personally I'd rob the manifolds & m-pump and build up a turbo motor
