Long block v short block - Bangaway - 10-11-2012

I'm stupid---Would someone plese explain to me what the "long block" is and what the "short block" is? It seems that these are in reference to the OM606 but that's all I know. While I'm at it, which do you prefer and why?

long is with a head, right? Short means just the block no head.

Yes short block is the engine block itself and the "rotating assembly" that is pistons, rods, and crank. Long block is the complete engine without assesories.
