OM617 Water injection kit? - haromaster87 - 11-29-2012

Hey guys,

I have a 1984 300D turbo. I've done little things to it, always looking for new stuff to try though. I read on peach parts about some people who have set up water injection systems for Turbo OM617's. I've also found a few threads on here about it.

I'm very interested in doing this. I've found a lot of threads about people who have them and what results they get, but I cannot find any good threads about how to put one together or install. I know you need a container for the water, some kind of small water pump, and a nozzle.

That's about as vaugley as I understand it. I've read that some people say the nozzle is pretty basic, and others who say the nozzle needs to be pretty specific. These are the details I could use help with.

I'm not expecting a major performance increase, but I've read that water injection, over time, can really help clean the engine out and get it running a bit better, this is what i'm on for.

Does anyone know of a kit for this that might be useful? Or who can maybe link me up to some stuff that I can buy to do a DIY kit?

Thanks guys! Great to be a part of Super Turbo Diesel!

Get a 100psi pump, solenoid ($30) and bozzle(mcmastercarr) and hook er' up.

my experiences::

I have a couple of window larger capacity window washer tanks that can double as a water/methanol injection tank.

Flexible in price if interested.

I got a 200psi pump from Devil's Own, as well as a 3gallon/hour nozzle. I ran some tubing under the floor mats to a jug in the the drunk for the reservoir. I just have it connected to a switch in the cab and turn it on when there is boost, but I'm planning on hooking up a pressure sensor so it will automatically kick on under load

That sounds simple enough. Might be a good way for me to try it out before doing a more complex set up. Where/how did you mount your nozzle?

I drilled and tapped a hole in the flat spot near the outlet of the compressor housing, I'll try to get a picture after work

That'd be great, thanks! How complex was it to drill and tap that spot? I imagine you had to take great care to ensure you got all metal shavings out.

If you ever decided to remove the Water Injection, would you be able to just put a bolt in place of the nozzle or something?

you take that inlet housing off the turbo and then drill/tap out on a workbench or something.
Need a stubby 13mm wrench to take of 6 bolts that hold it in place. Then drill a 11/32in hole I think, then the 1/4 npt tap.
and yeah if you ever need to you can just put a 1/4in plug in instead of your nozzle.

So would you say it was a worth while modification? Would you do it again if you had a chance?

I think it's a super easy thing to do. And it shows definite results. That extra alcohol as fuel sure made my 617 smooth out and power up at the top end.
And as noted, you can remove the parts and just plug the hole in the housing.

RE: OM617 Water injection kit? - sassparilla_kid - 11-29-2012

I didn't even take the compressor housing off, just put the turbo on the driveway and drilled the hole, was just really careful to make sure it was oriented so all shavings would fall out.

So here is where the nozzle went in

And here is the pump

And to the left of the pump you can barely make out my ghetto solution to blocking off the oil drain left over from when I took the stock air cleaner out, it is some heavy duty aluminum foil folded up a bunch of times, squeezed around the drain and held on by a hose clamp.

Even just plain water while cruising on the interstate will produce some results. It really cleans the engine if anything which is a major plus if you burn grease. Water is basically free so its a nice mod.

I will post some pictures soon of my set up in "The Sleeper -- Part Deux". I think I found a donor body, so the mods that I have been sitting on will be going on in the next few weeks and the Sleeper will be back into action.
