turbo oil pressure regulator - OM616 - 04-01-2013

I am pretty sure that I am blowing oil past the turbine seal of my GT2056V that I have on my 616. I have reduced the orifice to .020 and I still am blowing oil out the back to the point where I can see spots on the back of the car.

I have read that the GTXXXXV turbos can only handle a max pressure of about 30PSI, so the 100+ PSI of oil pressure that the 616 has, along with thick oil, results in oil going out the back.

I am going to be up-grading to a GT2256V and do not want to blow out the seals in that one, so I am going to make a pressure regulator that will keep the turbo oil feed pressure from exceeding 30PSI. I am going to make a new cover plate for the oil filter housing that has the regulator built into it. I will also have a tap for a pressure gage to monitor the turbo oil pressure.

I imagine that this has been done before, just have not seen it yet.

Guess i have never really read about blowing seals out with oil pressure. Probably why they have restrictors in them stock.

I used a restrictor after my GT22 seals blew (it started running away). Hopefully the new seals don't go as well.

My car has 30 lbs at idle, and I think the GT turbos are a lower oil flow design where it just needs a little volume to supply the bushings, as apposed to the T3 that needs a higher volume of oil supply to generate pressure at the bushings.

The GT2056V I have was for a new car that uses thin oil and has a supply pressure of around 30 lbs. Our engines use thick oil and have over 100 lbs of pressure, so even with a .015 inch restrictor, I still am over pressurizing the turbo.

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who has blow the seals out.

Is you oil drain above the oil level in the pan? If there is to much resistance in the oil drain from the turbo it can cause this. on the factory turbo set up's the drain is above the oil level so. can drain freely.

Yep all is good. It is just a matter of oil pressure compatibility.

How do you have 100+ psi of oil pressure, I thought they only went to about 3 bar ~ 45 psi or so? Or am I missing something?

RE: turbo oil pressure regulator - Simpler=Better - 04-04-2013

It's 3 bar minimum while driving, the actual is around 100

Say whaaaaat!? I never knew

got a oilregulator on a car i bought, but am interested in another to limit the oilpressure for the bmw turbo on a 617 engine,
noone that knows where to buy?
