om602.982 (290tdt) black smoke, emission problem - swampmonkey - 04-24-2013

Hey there, a friend have one of these 2.9 liter 5 cylinder engines sitting in his w210..

rotary pump, drive by wire.

he cant pass the emission test, to much black smoke, 0,8 and the limits is 0.2.

while testing they floor the pedal enough to make the engine hit max rpm and then releases trottle..

steps tried.
driving like a madman before the test didnt improve the value much,

what steps can be taken to reduce the amount of black smoke, mixture in fuel? removal of lines to alda? (would the ECU go bananas?)

thanx in advance

Adjust a ton of slop in to the throttle linkage so it only get like 1/4 throttle when it floored? it will be a complete dog

If the engine/pump is fiddled with to pass try and pass the test it will still fail because they will know it isn't revving properly. Apart from that its drive by wire so nothing to mess with.

Drive by wire the pump won't have an ALDA and there is very little you can do adjustment wise. First place to start assuming the engine isn't a dog would be to get the injectors serviced. You could try some injector cleaner in the fuel but it sounds to me like at least 1 injector isn't happy.

Is that your plan? ha ha

seems to be an injector then.

putting something under the pedal only giving it 2/3 could work if they doesnt notice, but i think they will.

injector cleaner it is then, what would be an approximate price for a new set of injectors if it doesnt work?

If you dont have a local shop give http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/user-1986.html a shout. You won't need new injectors just the old ones rebuilt.

You might want to give the engine a full service as well including valve adjustment with it being a 602. If it hasn't been done in a while you never know, it might do the trick.
