OM 603 NA knocking - Jambo - 05-20-2013
Hi all,
Hope I can get some direction here. My OM603 NA starts without problems and then runs beautifully quiet for about 30s to a minute and then starts to sound like a poorly tuned tractor.
I have recently had the pump recalibrated and reconditioned. The injectors were tested for pressure and spray pattern.
I now am suspecting timing of the pump or possibly still injectors.
I must also add that when I increase the revs by about 1000 it gets quiet again and actually sounds like a 280 Petrol.
I am not conversant with diesels and the G is at my local Bosch dealer with whom I have a good understanding.
If anyone can shed some light please let me know so I can tell my Bosch dealer to save time.
I am going on a 700km trip through the Namib desert end of next month and don't want to get stuck halfway.
Sure hope its not a bearing problem.

timing can do a lot i nregards to making noise...when I first fit my 6.5mm pump on my '83, it sounded like a cummins truck engine... I think is was a little too advanced, but I'm not certain as it was a year or so ago...but that was immediately upon starting... not sure what the delay could be unless it's something electronic that is changing...

I'm guessing it's a lifter noise. My 603 has it too. After a trip down the highway it's quiet. If I drive around town and spend time idling, the knock comes back.
Mercedes updated the part# for the lifter 3 times, so that ought to tell you something about them.

Thank you for the replies so far. At least it doesn't look that bad then.
It does not go away after the engine is warm/hot.
The Bosch agent is fiddling with the timing as we speak and hopefully I will have an answer by this evening.
As far as other symtoms are concerened , there is one thing and that is when the G idles the idling is not constant and sometimes it sounds as if someone is in the G pressing on the gas for a fraction of a second.
I removed the electronic switch on the back of the pump and it stopped. I do however not think the two problems are related but then I'm no expert.

It could be a noisy lifter my 300SDL did the same thing until I ran a can of seafoam in the oil right before an oil change. now it's quiet

OK, here an update. Firstly it is now quieter but not as it should be. The Bosch dealer adjusted the timing statically again. He agreed it should be better still and he kept the vehicle for another day.
I did add Liqui Moly additive to the oil specifically designed for the valves. This did in my opinion not make a difference. BTW. Are the lifters not auto adjusting thus should not be making any noise?

On my 87 300sdl the lifters where sticking closed due to being dirty and where knocking really badly. I ran the seafoam cleaner in the oil to clean them out. Now they are clean they self adjusted and don't make any noise.
I had the same problem on my 95 Subaru legacy my guess is the previous owners used cheap oil with out detergents or got there oil changed at a quick lube

OK. eventually went to fetch my G again.
Unfortunately have to give them a vote of no confidence since they had the G for two weeks and nothing was improved.
I did add some "detergent" in the form of Liqui Moly Hydraulic Lifter additive.

It has been in now for about 2-300 km maybe I should let it work a bit longer.
BTW. Could it be worn lifters? How serious could that be?
I had a look at the cam and that shows virtually no wear visible to the eye.

It's not as bad as camshaft/lifter face wear. The lifters just stop adjusting for lash automatically under certain conditions, like low RPM operation encountered in stop and go driving.
At one point, MB said that hardened and flattened o-rings on the tube that slides into the oil filter can cause a lifter noise due to oil pressure loss at idle. Were this the cause, you would notice low oil pressure at hot idle.

That makes sense.
My oil pressure was a little low for my liking just before I did a service with new oil and filter. It is now again at 1.5bar when idling and goes to full scale as soon as I start driving.
The lifters are quiet when the engine is revved a little. Should I maybe go for a thicker oil? I currently use Caltex Delo 400 15W-40.

Our temperatures don't go much below 0deg.C but mostly about 5deg.C and go up to 35deg. C sometimes more.
Since I have the car back I now notice a tick tick tick noise as though one diesel line is not right. In fact it seems as though the one I replaced (original part) is of different material thickness and tends to vibrate a bit more than the others.?
