OM 617 Oil Cooler Lines - zeeman - 09-03-2014

Is it neccessary to retain the factory size hose and tubing when relocating the stock oil cooler. I am wondering if one used a A/N 8 fitting which is smaller, if it would flow sufficient oil flow. I am sure the factory used this size for a reason. Any ideas out there.

-8 O.D. tubing is 1/2" so you're good. I think the O.D. of the stock plumbing is 14mm, which is .551".

Are you doing to do a weld on adapter fitting to existing hard tubing or are you going to roll your own all the way from the housing?

I am going to silver solder fittings onto the exisiting hard line and run braided stainless hose, Thanks Ron

I have some of Mercedes 4x4 fittings coming, but the stock 617 tube I.D. is 1/2" the -8 AN I.D. is 3/8". It would seem that a -10 AN would be closer being it is a 1/2" I.D. Or am I missing something here?

I intend to do the same on an FJ40. If the filter housing stays in place it makes sense. The Mercedes hard lines are as nice as they get.

Going from -10 to -8 will increase the pressure drop in the hose by 2.5 times. It would probably still work, but I wouldn't do it. -10 is generally the smallest size recommended for oil coolers.

You can't determine the ID of an AN hose size by just the dash number. It varies with the type of hose and even a little by brand. Generally the socketless type have the largest ID that is close to the dash size, the reusable types are smaller, and the high pressure teflon lined is even smaller.

-8 socketless will be about .5" and teflon lined is about to .4"

Either way, -8 is quite small for oil cooler lines. My factory 606 hoses were just shy of 19mm ID (-12, .75") and the hard lines were about 5/8" ID. I recall the 617 lines being similarly sized.

Also, the fittings have an even smaller ID than the hose, so you have even more restriction at the fittings.

I just measured an oil cooler hard line behind the driver's headlamp on my 606 turbo car at .590", 15mm. This is smaller than the ID of 5/8" that you measured.

Ah, good to know. I just assumed the -8 meant 8/16" or 1/2" ID. Didn't realize it was the OD.

I'm using -10 hose and fittings on mine with the stock cooler, but there's no reason it wouldn't work with an aftermarket one.
