Compressor / blower on OM606, what type,,, - tgg416 - 01-09-2015

Hey, what compressors is it to chose between ?
I have a OM606.962 and I've been told the Eaton M90 is loud and noisy ones.
Anyone know another type to use thats a litle less noisy?

Tanx

Does anyone know why the M90 is so loud on an OM and not loud on the factory 3.8L V6?

What 3.6 engine are these on? I have a v6 buick with a factory supercharger I was hoping to rob blower off for my Mercedes. .

We've mounted these for many years on vw vr6 engines. Those are great compressors for high end power. If your not using a turbo beside it I bet it's the best way to go for power. Lag is unnoticeable because the boost is linear with rpm. I personally like the feel of a turbo kicking in and you do not have that with those.

Btw I'll be following this thread. I still need to make a decision about my charger. I can pick up a eaton m45 (or something like that) for free at my job but I doubt it can deliver enough air. I think those are for 1.4L TSI vw engines....

On the gm the crank speed is relatively constant, on a high compression diesel you need a lot more mass to soak up the speed variations in the crank. In an automotive application that would make the engine slow to rev.

The crank actually slows down as each cylinder comes up on compression, then speeds up as the power stroke happens, so it'll flop the gears inside the blower back and forth 3 times per crank revolution.
Adapting an overrunning pulley from an alternator to the blower would probably quiet it down by quite a bit.

Same thing happens with manual trans' with thin oil in them, you get this HORRIBLE grindy noise when you set the idle too low, from the gears flopping back and forth however many times per revolution. Thus the dual mass flywheel.

I have a holset hx30/35 on top rpm. But in my Gelendewagen I need more power on low rpm.
Thats why I would like to find out what superchargers that is to choose between.
The one Fred (FRAS) mention looks intresting but a bit expensive before it ends up here with all taxes. The Eaton m90 Its possible to find on a good price but that one is so noisy so after a while I probobly hate it.
Second choice is compound turbo, but now I consentrate on superchargers.

If you use some kind of thick walled charge cooler and 5mm thick aluminum in both tubes and sheet metal you will get rid off a lot off noise. You will draw air via the turbo so the inlet noise should be pretty alright, just make sure you have a good airfiter or even the stock airbox or similar.

When doing a registration on a home made car here in Sweden (SFRO) you have to do a noise control. When I did that the guys from SFRO told me almost everyone who fails do that because off the airbox and not because off the exhaust Tongue

Eaton M90 is a good charger and if you can pick one up with the magnetic clutch you can rev that really high on low RPM to achieve boost and then when the turbo kicks in just disengage the clutch.

Thanks FRAS, by thick walled charge cooler, you mean intercooler ? I have already a water/air intercooler so then ne t is a good thick airintake ?
Tanx again all

RE: Compressor / blower on OM606, what type,,, - F.R.A.S - 01-10-2015

Water/air is awesome to get noise down and pretty much what I meant. Take a boat for example. Straight pipes above water and straight pipes below water Smile Huge difference really Smile

Good luck mate.

anyone run a eaton 112 with no turbo for quick response at low end ,i.e.for off roading

RE: Compressor / blower on OM606, what type,,, - Edian727 - 01-17-2015

The m62 and m90 GM used on their 3.8 v6 had silencer channels built into the bottom the sc were in connected to the intake. intake air was routed through the silencer but i do not know how it was controlled, or really how it worked, but it did. if they are stock these motor are very quite and you only hear a little wine with lots of throttle and rpm's.

RE: Compressor / blower on OM606, what type,,, - TurboTim - 01-18-2015

Anyone tried mounting an M90 on the intake of a OM606 and driving it off the stock belt. It looks like I could do it by chopping off the back half of the charger so it isn't so balky. Anyone got a stock OM606 manifold they wanna sell? I am not ready to cut up my sheet metal plenum on mine.

I'll trade my 606 turbo intake manifold + Eaton M90 + water:air IC
For your sheet metal plenum! I'll pay shipping too! Big Grin

It's just the plenum half that is sheet metal not the runners. I could post pics.
