The turbo isn't really that big, it just looks huge because I has a water cooled exhaust housing

In europe, they are rather common. I worked on 4 different 616/716 powered boats.

I'd think the raw water cooled exhaust port is far too close to the turbo. The exhaust needs to rise up after the turbo and then go down and the water is injected on the downslope so that it cannot run back to the turbo and ruin it. No other marine diesel I've seen has the water injected that close. I could be mistaken as I've not seen it run nor had experience with that particular design; but I have decades of professional experience with dozens of different marine diesels as a Captain and mechanic for a major builder. Nanni is a respected marinizer so they must have put some thought into it.
