Reliable 300-350hp from OM606? - Matej - 02-27-2015

Hello gentlemen,
The plan is to reliably squeeze about 300-350hp out of an OM606.

First of all, I would like to buy a '98-99 turbo motor, however, I have also considered using a '95-97 NA unit, if one happens to come by locally for cheap. What is the weakest point of the NA motor, and approximately how much power can they reliably make with a turbo before things start going bad? What exactly is different inside them, as opposed to the OM606.962? Are the turbo internals a direct fit?

Second, I plan to use an HX35 turbo. The reason is because it is easy to find, easy to rebuild, and affordable. If however I should not use this turbo for some reason, or if there are better turbo options that can be just as easily obtained (HE351?), please let me know.

Finally, my main question is, what size elements should I be looking into with the specified turbo and power goal? 7mm? 7.5mm? I assume this is quite a generic motor setup, so any input will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

NA engine has weaker pistons and rods. Word on the street is the exhaust valves are different too. But EPC only shows one valve for all 606/5/4's. If you can buy used turbo parts they go right in...but thats a odd way towards the reliable path (used into another motor and all.....) HE351CW is a better choice if your on the cheap, bigger wheel on the intake and a bit smaller on the exhaust. Elements would be DIESELMEKEN 7.5mm as they will be more then enough for your needs.
Good luck!

Thank you for the information.
Putting the turbo parts into an NA motor is just a thought for later down the road, in case I do happen to purchase an NA motor and it blows up on me. Smile
Would the 7.5mm elements not be too big for 300hp? I thought people were shooting for 400hp with those. Though I am still learning about diesels.

Not sure, I think they could be dialled back, 7.5mm & an HX35 will see 380-390hp at the crank on an OM605 so on a 606 it should be more than 400hp even.

7.5mm is perfect, you can turn it down as much as you desire but the advantages are always there. Faster throttle response, short injection time and so on. It takes 30sec to adjust the fuel with the Dieselmeken ALDA Smile

N/A om606 will do 350hp every day all day. Major difference are the rods but that's no worry on that level of power.

Cheers / F
