Max rpm on OM60x engines - Matej - 03-27-2015

Hello,
How high can the OM60x engines rev reliably before encountering issues? Do the 606/5/4 motors rev higher than the 603/2/1?

On diesels the injection pump plays the main role in determining the max rpm of the engine, but I am also curious if the engines can hold these rpm's for prolonged periods of time reliably, or if they are prone to suffer from valve float or dropped valves or any such issue.
Mainly I am trying to ascertain if there would be benefit to upgrading the valve springs for a drift or race application, or if there really is no need for the rpm's that the pump allows the engine to reach.

Thank you for any input.

6500 is kinda safe for OM606 on stock valve springs. Valves will float though when back pressure gets high in exhaust. People rev to 7k with springs.

Great information.
Is the stiffness/ratio of the stock springs for the 601/2/3 and 4/5/6 motor posted anywhere? It would be good to know, to help determine what rate to go with for an upgrade.

Mercedes has the info in WIS.. I posted 601/602/603 spring pressure a while ago along with using the upgraded M103 springs in the 602/603

do not for get that there is other things then vale springs that can make disaster at high revs..

Which parts of these engines are most prone to suffer at high rpm's? That is exactly what I am curious about, along with approximately what rpm's start affecting which parts. I mainly mentioned the valve springs because those are generally the universal thing that needs to be upgraded for any higher rpm engine.

Is there any good place to download the Mercedes WIS? I have attempted several times before, but either the links would be bad or the program would not run.
Thanks for the tip about your valve spring thread, I found it:

Having the specs of the stock springs handy, places such as Supertech should also have no trouble making custom springs or possibly even already offering ones that would work.

However, has anyone attempted converting to a dual-valve spring setup, by adding a smaller spring to the inside? This is popular on a lot of high-revving engines. I assume it should not be too hard, though I have not yet had a chance to close look at the spring hats and seats.

dual valve springs has been replaced by the behive spring in which the stock 606 uses already. There are a number of aftermarket (stronger/stiffer) springs that fit the 606/605 with no mods. I used ford 4.6 comp cam springs in my 605. I only needed to machine a spring seat.
Im sure with enough effort a duel spring could be used. But i think the effort would be better served elsewhere in the engine.
