A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - swatmugga - 08-31-2015

Heho Guys.

I just want to give a short feedback about my china holset 35 turbo, cost 280 Dollar.
http://www.ebay.de/itm/HX35-HX35W-T3-Turbo-Turbocharger-Dodge-94-98-Ram-2500-3500-Cummins-6BT-I6-Diesel-/311427736903?hash=item48828a2547

I drove it 5000km on 1.5 Bar without intercooler, then 15 000km on 1.5 Bar with intercooler.

No Problems until now.

It came with around 3/10mm wave radial play. This is unnoticable when connected on the oil line. Then you have no play.

This doesnt change until now. I get nice power output on 120cc of fuel and 1.5 Bar.

I have the feeling that the internal wastgate does not seal so good. On one day i have goodlike spooling. On other day its very bad. I think that the closing cap deforms because of the massive heat.

Pros:

- Nice Price (Around 1/3 of original)
- Good Power output
- Good lifetime
- 800°C thats 1073k are no problem.

Cons:

- A bit later spooling than original
- Internal wastgate not perfect.
- I dont want to try 2 Bar with intercooler (i dont want to destroy turbo)

Just you can think about if the high price is worth it.

Thanks! Very helpful for budget builders Smile

To be honest, The spoolup looks a lot worse than with my hx35 7mm (about 120cc also) with the worst manifold design ever Tongue. However, for some cheap fun it's good bang for the buck.

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - Simpler=Better - 09-01-2015

I've heard rumors that the problem is balance-so if you have it re balanced when you buy it, then you're in the clear. Do you think that was the issue?

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - swatmugga - 09-01-2015

the balance dosnt have an effect on how fast turbo spools. the clearance between compressor wheel and housing ist Most Important

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - Simpler=Better - 09-01-2015

Sorry, I meant that the radial play would be caused by poor balancing at the factory

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - starynovy - 09-02-2015

Same here, works good so far some 15 000+. HX35W and HX30.

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - m1tch - 09-02-2015

I think that the chinachargers back in the day weren't the best owing to quality control issues, I think that the current ones are actually pretty well built and are using the same design as some of the older Garrett etc designed turbos (now that they have moved on). I think if the quality was too bad then there would be loads of refunds and the business wouldn't exactly remain in business.

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - Insane190d - 09-04-2015

I bought a dodge cummins that had one on it. Eventually took it off for bigger turbo. The turbo was still very tight (no shaft play) and spun great, only problem was the inducer size was smaller than stock turbo inducer so ran less boost and higher egt. I would definitely run one on my car but just make sure the inducer is the same size as a stock Holset.

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - barrote - 09-05-2015

the china crap , is a question of "quality control" and fabrication / manufacture tolerances. like AK47 , it shots kils but 1 in 10 100mts shot hit the targuet.

I understand that not all members have the Money for Garret crap, but one of the best things i done was buying garret original crap for 400€ and 150€ of reconditioning, is lasting for ages and running very well.

china is 250 and if u´re lucky last 50.000 km . and u buy a Mitsubishi and last 20.000, as the ones in the BMW 170HP engines .
and sometimes it takes the engine with it!!!
regards

Even if the turbo fails there is an intercooler in the way to there won't be any metal parts going into the engine, they are cheap as they are mass produced, use older turbo tech and not 100% to perfect tolerances. Considering you can buy 3-4 China turbos for the same price as a single Garrett turbo its simpler and cheaper to just replace the turbo rather than repairing a higher end turbo - you also have the choice to simply change the size of the turbo if you want as well as they are cheap vs being stuck with a more expensive garrett etc.

They used to be rather bad quality, but as I have pointed out, if they were all failing all of the time and being returned then the company making them wouldn't be around for long - its in their best interest that it does last a while. As long as you don't expect it to run at high boost all the time and have the correct oil flow to them I don't see any issues running them.

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - barrote - 09-06-2015

yep, u have a point mitch ,
the thing i have never seen a compressor failing in such a way that the ingestion of debris by engine constitutes a problem(at least in piston engines) Smile. same happens for the turbine side, maybe some metal pieces get stuck in the catalist filter Wink something that shouldn´t be a major issue.
what about seal failure!!! wich is about 90% of the failures, sometimes u may loose the all engine just cause it starved some oil Wink
and what about drinking oil from new? i dont know about there , but in my planet a liter of not so bad oil is 20€ more less .
i had a engine doing 1 liter 1000km, thats bad.

but is up to u, or to all , as i said not everybody has budget to garret crap....

Couldn't one get a china turbo and swap out bearings?  Or balance the turbine

You can get rebuild kits for them, but sometimes its cheaper to replace it with a new one as they are quite cheap - depends on the wear on the shaft.

Would not want to live on your planet man.  Big Grin 4€ crap oil, ~7€ top performance Mobil1, Millers or Castrol.

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - barrote - 09-07-2015

yep , u dont even know what is going on here with the F$#%$ engine oil, Mobil 1 is about 3 and something in store, 60 liter drum abou 10€ castrol edge is even more expensive, and by tthe way i dont have a shop, i´m a private. sometimes i can buy from friends but is like 300€ a can of 25lts wich makes a litle over 10€

regards

Anyone tried more than 1,5 Bar with intercooler and china turbo yet?

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - barrote - 09-12-2015

Funny u ask that question, dont u want to reformulate and change the 1 by a 2?
now without the joke Wink what is the boost u´re running on your engine? whith that china thing like u said?

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - MFSuper90 - 09-13-2015

We had a blade on a compressor wheel break off one of our tractors one time and it got trapped underneath the other blades and stalled the compressor wheel and shaft.
Wasn't a china turbo, but barrote was said about ingestion stuff so I thought I'd share

RE: A few words to china turbos [review after 20 000km] - barrote - 09-14-2015

yep i see , but u do run great boost right?, like i do! at the moment peak 3.5 / 4BAR absolute. the 4 bar is a peak thing related with default in the installation.
my major problems have been with sand ingestion, and that is a F$#% thing to have.....

Not really, just a stock farm tractor. Maybe 2-2.5bar max? But the turbo had many, many hours on it.
How do you get sand in a turbo, no air filter?

nop my car is day driver, so usually there lot of sand asside the roads , driving behind the others cause that to happen, i was using a washable filter , and the suction is so great that it ingests small sand grains , and u know what happens after. maybe i have to change to a diff kind of filter!!!! at the moment i´m using filter shirts made of women nets.... Wink seem to be working good.

I hate gauze type filter elements for that reason. Foam and paper FTW.
