Want to turbocharge/build an OM606.912 - DailyDriven - 02-08-2016

Hey guys, first post here on this forum. I've got an 89 300D with the n/a 6cyl. Believe it to be an OM606.912. I've been doing tons of research but can't seem to find a clear answer on exactly how to go about modding this thing. I love the car but my biggest complaint is the engine, it is absolutely gutless. I am located in the U.S. as well and the car has a Euro VIN, which is weird. I've owned it a year now and I really want to make some power with this thing. Based on my findings online, it looks like I may or may not have oil squirters, which seem to be pretty critical in order to turbocharge the thing. How deep do I need to tear into this thing to get to it? Also wondering where to source parts for this project in the U.S. and which ones to get. Or am I just better off swapping an engine that is already turbo'd?  Any help is appreciated.

a 1989 300d can´t be fitted with a 606 N/A it rather is a 603 n/a wich is more or less the same.... sure u can turbo it, but maybe it could be cheaper to buy a 606 td.
anyhow u can safelly turbo that thing and get 300HP , it will be a lot of fun to drive after!!!

Well maybe it was a 603.912. Not sure. So what all do I need? T4 manifold, turbo, oil feed, intercooler, and a pump off of a 606?

Update: found a wrecked car with the 3.0L inline 6. Going to find out if it is turbocharged. Would I be able to swap the guts out of it and stick them in my 89? Car is a 95 model year.

u have to read a lot more , before your atempt to have a STD....
and u got to know MB´s as well.
i belive u own the mithic W124, assuming its from 89 and has a 6 cylinder engine , then u have a OM603 engine, this model was equiped with the the OM603.91X a N/A version and the OM603.96X wich is a Turbo version , both use a Bosch M series injection pump with a mechanichal governor. In 1993 the W124 was named E class and was the start of the 4 valve engines , and in 1995 the birth o the E class w210 model.
The w124 was sold with a OM606.91X between 1993 and 1995, turbo models were only sold with the OM603.96X. after the
the 606.96X is only found in E300, W210 chassis. they are equipped with a Bosch M pump with electronic governor called EDC.

The easyest thing u can do is buy a E300, remove the engine drop it in the w124 and install the OM603 pump in it, since that pump is a lot detuned u have to buy a superpump, otherwise the 606 will be a limp engine .

Answering to your question , any engine can be turbocharged with success, but the missing hardware is huge... so is better to start with a already turbo car asside, and cheaper.

when u decide what to do i can guide u during the procedure.
regards

Yes, car is OM603.91x Decided to pass on the wrecked one as it was a 30 hour round trip to bring it home, and that's a long way for something that may not even run, and the engine has 80,000 more miles than the one I've got in mine. There is also someone with manis and a turbo setup, waiting to hear from him as well. I daily drive the car and it would be a huge project to swap. Helps knowing a swap would be somewhat simple however. Will post again when I figure out exactly what I'll do with it. I am pretty new to these engines so I'm sure it's going to be a huge learning process either way.

yep ... helps a lot knowing what wich one wants to do...... MB diesel tunning is quite easy to do... having the Money for a superpump is 80% of the way Wink

Would you be interested in a turbo 603 3.0L short block (oilpan, block, crank, rods, pistons, squirters - no head) on the east coast? I don't know the mileage or history so it'll be cheap.
