engine starting problem - yota4life - 03-06-2016

Alright guys I'm at a loss right now. So I swapped in an om617 into my 2wd yota. At first it wasn't turning over very fast so I figured that was the problem. Got it to turn over fast enough to where it should start. It kicks over like it wants too start and that's it. Checked the timing and it should be good at least on the camshaft. Haven't done a drip test yet. Little to no play in the timing chain. It's getting fuel no air in the fuel lines. Glow plugs are working. Any ideas on what it could be

what type colour is the smoke , if there is any smoke?
usually make sure pump is not offset , or in case engine came from junk yard make sure pump rack is free
good luck

Indeed I had the same problems with a sticky rack.

Like an off color whiteish color

white smoke means combustion temperature is too low , weather it is cause some valve is open, pump offset or too advanced or retarded, or engine leaks water, lack of compression , well u know!!!
start by cheking injection time, glow plugs , dada them move along the way til compression test...
90 % is glow plugs, pump too much out of time 5% ... the others 5%
good luck

How are your glow plugs wires/controlled?

In my Jeep, I had to put the solenoid I used for the glow plugs on the block where the cruise actuator was in order to get a good enough ground. Chased my tail for weeks cause I thought fender mount was OK.

Glow plugs are wired with the om617 control box. I'll try grounding it better and see if that helps

Well still no luck. Still haven't done a compression check but adjusted the valves to spec they were way to tight. Gonna do a drip test tomorrow. Really stumped on this.

Make sure you have a ground strap from the engine block to the body also.

I have a big cable from block to the frame.
