Excessive oil in turbo or intake manifold 617 engine can be caused by poorly sealed blow-by pickup tube in some cases. There was a Mbz bulletin about this. Next valve adj. might want to ck. Suggested to seal with Silicone.

Inside the valve cover, earlier 617 had round tube for oil separation, before going out vent that was ok ,later version partly molded in, and a plate covering, oil was to enter from far end,was not sealed well and oil could be drawn straight up to vent outlet on top of valve cover into air filter or turbo intake.

Ahhh Yes!

I know what you are talking about now. The blowby (oil vapor) has to travel from the back of the valve cover up to the front through a passage that is covered with a tin plate. You are saying that plate must be sealed up? IIRC it is only attached to the cover in a few spots, almost like it is tack welded in place.

P.S.
Your descriptions are kinda confusing Huh

Yes, this plate in some cases was poorly sealed, allowing oil vapor to by pass separation part of passage.

P.S.
We all think differently, that is why sincere questions are asked and more explanation will follow.

So the Plate should be completely sealed front to back? Do you have any pictures? I do not. Sad Where will the separated oil exit?

That's a good thought, Captain,I always had that same question, where will the oil exit, but never got an answer,So I only sealed from front to mid way back, never had a problem with this. I think the oil drains back out the entrance, not sure of this.Have several extra valve covers now ,will do some testing and post tomorrow.

Cool! I seem to remember both of my covers being different.... The '81 SD had this separator we are speaking of and my '82 D cover did not (just the hole straight up to the outlet on top)... But I will have to double check this and look into it further! This has me very interested, that's for sure...

Here is a pic.of the unsealed seam that allowed oil to by-pass the oil vapor. pick-up.
Vapor pick- up trough is totally open except for end near oil cap, which has a restrictor added. Oil will drain at left rear v/c hold down bolt casting and out vapor pick-up inlet.
Earlier, engines did have straight out except for screen in hose. When turbos added, increased blow-by ,taking to much oil out with vapor.MBZ than installed round tube, approx. 37mm x325mm as vapor pick-up.That also allowed excessive oil out.Last version vapor pick-up cast in with v/c with plate covering.
Sealing this last version, make sure seam is sealed, and half the length of metal cover plate is enough.
