1987 190d benz that has a 5 speed manual. they want $2000 and no idea on mileage or what does work

[Image: 00r0r_8BdiP4OJ42M_600x450_zpsffe997fa.jpg]
Im curious if the transmission will bolt up to a om606?

After some research, the 602 flywheel on the 606 fits and the trans should bolt up.

Next question---

What trans should be in this w201 and has anyone put a 500hp 606 on one?

What i hope to make of a 190 some day

You'll save a lot of time and $$$ if you just go out and buy a 16v and ruin it with a 606. The clutch will need to be sorted, the ring and pinion will be too short and the LSD carrier won't work with the taller gears, the driveshaft flex discs will cause problems.

AFAIK, there are only 2 5speed trannies that are worth a crap. The one from the 16v (414?) with no overdrive and the one from the 300e that Duncansport is using.

An I6 is tight in a W124, severely limiting A/A intercooler options if you want to keep AC. They're tighter in the W201 chassis, as in no belt driven fan.

My advice: The 201 is great with lots of aftermarket chassis tuning support but you would be wise to stick to an I5, especially if you want to DD it. If your heart is set on a big I6, the W124 is going to be lightest chassis that the I6 will readily fit into. The R129 is a short W124 but they somehow made it heavy as hell.

well thats rain on my parade. we dont get the om605 here either so i dont know of a monster diesel that would fit.

Id be fine with electric fans, no a/c and water to air intercooler but if the exsisting trans is already crap and the next avalable 16v option drivetrain is basically crap then i have to walk away from the w201 chassis.

just found it super sexy with amg package and the size/weight look fun too

A 185mm 2.65 LSD carrier cost 850 new at the stealer. The rest of the 2.65 diff is readily available used. The driveshaft will need to be beefed up on a W124 too.

If you're prepared to make a few sacrifices, I say go with a W201, especially the 16v. They're light. The 16v also has a fast ratio steering gear.

Driveshafts are not problem to make but diffs and transmissions are something i cant make from scratch and dont see the money in a new one off part from stealer.

so the 16v has a close ratio 5 speed that is not and Over drive transmission? sounds like a poor match for highway traveling.

Correct, no overdrive, close ratio. Bad for highway? I like mine. I usually set the cruise at 80mph/3000rpm. I imagine OD would make it a little quieter and get a little better MPG, but nothing major.

None of the TD's from '95 down had OD.

no they didnt, but they did have a different ratio in the rearend 2.65 on both 300tdt w124 and 250td w201 if i am not misstaken...

regarding transmissions the 717.401 seems to hold up for quite a lot to.

717.401 is from 200/230e w123 with overdrive
717.404 is from 2.3 16v
717.450 is from 300e 24valve

Yes, 2.65 ratios on the 201 and w124, the na606 equipped 124 had a 2.87. To clarify, my comments about having no overdrive being fine for hwy driving assume a 2.65 ring and pinion with stock 201/124 tire diameter.

You could bolt a 3.07 ring gear to a 16v LSD carrier. 1st gear could end up worthless on a high power build with a gear that short, overdrive would be a must.

I am putting an om606 and 6spd manual into a w126 1987 300sdl S class It already has the om603 so its an easy swap. But the 1987 w124 300d has the same engine but smaller car

The om603 is basically the same engine 3.0 inline 6 with a single cam head also capable of decent power 300ish

Ive built up one with the G54B up to 360HWP. I love the car but the engine and fuel injection is junk so you need to go stand alone to make any power. I would love to happen upon a non rusty one and stick my 605 in it.

If you buy a BMW you have a lot of things for free. Solid gearboxes and diffs. But it has to be e36 328 or 325tds to have the bullet proof stuff already bolted on. Then you just re-weld the bell housing on the gearbox and mount the om606. Good room for IC and they are made for straight sixes to start with.

Fun well balanced car that will make you smile for a long time. And yea, BMW has 240mm clutches readily available so all you need is a solid flywheel and a nice pressure plate (Sachs 765) and you're good to go.

Yea, the M3 is also a good contender but a lot more expensive. The 328 cost nothing. Another good thing is that you can sell crank and some other engine parts for some good money. The 2.8 crank will make 2.8-liter, the tds-crank will give 2.7-liters in all m20 or m50 engines. Yes, everything fits across on BMW Smile

Here is our om605 car, a e36 316 Compakt Cool
Old picture so now the car is more ready...

om606 will fit nicely in these cars, just throw the old wisco-fan out and put a couple of 12" electric in and your good to go.

The om605 is almost the exact length of the m51d25 engine in the 325tds, but the m50b20 ---> s54b32 is a bit longer, maybe an inch shorter than the om606, so there is no problem with room.

But as I said, only 328, 325tds and m3 has the bullet proof gearbox and diff (for cheap except of the m3). But if you find a 330d with the 6spd for cheap that's also super strong stuff, the 330i I don't know about...

The old getrag 260/280 will not cope with diesel torque.

(01-19-2014, 11:40 AM)raysorenson My advice: The 201 is great with lots of aftermarket chassis tuning support but you would be wise to stick to an I5, especially if you want to DD it. If your heart is set on a big I6, the W124 is going to be lightest chassis that the I6 will readily fit into.
How much bigger(outside dimensions) than an M103 is the OM606? because the M103 was a factory engine option in the W201

There are ways to import for cheap. Will not write it out but with some imagination you can figure it out! I'll stuff the car with what ever you need as long as it's legal Smile And we'll coordinate this so your newly purchased Dieselmeken 8mm IP and one of our exhaust manifolds will come along in the shipping...
