Looking to start a career in early july
They say don't limit yourself in a job hunt.
I'm looking to enter fields of; industrial hygiene, quality assurance, water treatment, environmental protection, toxicology.
My military background and education pair me up to those fields pretty well I think. I am willing to relocate. I am supporting a wife and two children so a salary should be at a minimum of 50k to start.
If you know anybody in those fields I'll welcome any tips, contacts, cronyism, etc.
Sounds like you're pretty well suited to go into something food processing related, lots of that around here so I'll keep my ears open.
When I was younger, I worked at a large hospital/medical school in their Environmental Health & Safety Dept.
What I really liked about this job was the varied responsibilities (hazards): chemical, biological, radiological, fire, life safety and inspection from the heliport on the roof to the water treatment in the subbasement and every nook & cranny between.
I was also a member of the emergency hazmat response team which brought an added excitement to each day.
The only down side was mountains of paperwork and the occasional ruined suit.
The pay was OK at the time but I'd need more now with a family.
The director was an Industrial Hygienist assisted by a Toxicologist.
If you don't mind the risks involved, it could be a good move.
Good luck!!
CRD that is exactly what I'm looking into. Do you still know anyone in the field?
Logan,
I've been out of the field for almost a decade, moved out-of-state, and didn't keep in contact with my coworkers. Sorry. Idk who's still there.
Perhaps having your "foot in the door" would help. I had worked on campus for 5 years before joining the EH&S dept and had a chance to get to know them before the job opening was posted. They usually prefer to hire "in-house" first.
Have you checked out the MD/VA/DC area? Lots of labs on and around military installations that could use someone with your qualifications. If I tell you any more, I'll have to kill you.
Have you considered cultivating your horticultural experience? There are a few states that are ripe for an agricultural boon: Colorado, Washington, etc
you need to hit CACI up !
Lololol
CACl? I love the botany ag stuff as a hobby but employment takes the fun out of it. I think that's why I love the IH stuff. Like you said its a very diverse field. A lot to be grown in those states though ;-). Maybe an independent consultant in my off time. :-)
CACI ... http://www.caci.com/
You'se gots to be kidding me ....
3D printing is something else I've been considering. There seems to be a bright future ahead of that niche industry.
It'll take a good bit of money to get started but it should* payoff.
Be your own boss!
*maybe
Every job I have had that was worth a damn I got from networking with friends and old co workers. If you had and IT security background I could surely find something for you at my place, their are many ex military and they like to hire ex military.
If you go work with Winmutt it means bi annual STD meetup time
I've been looking out west a bit ;-)
PM sent.
First interview today. Interviewing with the Department of the Navy at Lakehurst, NJ. East coast are you ready for me?

This job market sucks. Nobody seems to like the idea of hiring a ten year military veteran with relevant experience and a degree in a hard science. I guess I should just go fuck myself. Yeah im getting grumpy.

I am streamlined, my military experience directly relates to the field I am trying to enter. Degree supports it all too. I'm trying to be an industrial hygienist. I did all sorts of sampling on the military side. Air, water, noise, personnel exposure analysis, mold, asbestos, integrated pest management, radiological testing, safety, vector borne epidemiology, regionally specific health risk.
All that stuff and even entry level positions I am not getting called back. I'd like to think not a lot of vets have gone this route and therefore hiring managers aren't jaded by poorly performing military guys. But who knows. I am avoiding the factory handout jobs like the plague. I was offered 9$ an hour to make boxes in a factory. Sheesh.
Fingers crossed.

damn sun that's rough. Sounds like you've got your ducks in a row though for experience

(05-20-2014, 02:00 PM)hooblah What's this I hear of $15 minimum wage in the US?

My wife suggested today that we start thinking of other countries. I want to believe an educated vet can find work in the US so not jumping ship just yet....not limiting myself either

Nothing at my company that I know of but the east coast seems to be half decent for finding work.

Phone interview with OSHA in Denver yesterday. crossed fingers.

People don't quite understand the whole things.
Minimum wage goes up, so does the price of living.
We have several people work on our farm, and only a few of them are relatively intelligent enough to earn $12 an hour. The rest are lucky they still remember to eat and breathe.

A $15 an hour minimum wage will happen soon in Seattle; the Mayor proposed it, the Council has approved it in principle and is now hammering out the details of the implementation. Of course, the cost of living is sky-high here, so $15/hr. doesn't really roll very far. See
http://www.businessweek.com/articles/201...ut-a-fight
The southern suburb of SeaTac approved a $15/hr. minimum wage last November, by voter referendum. The intent was to see to it that workers at SeaTac International Airport could make a decent living. Unfortunately, an activist judge ruled that the Airport, though it lies within the boundaries of the City of SeaTac, is actually under the jurisdiction of the independent quasi-governmental body the Port of Seattle, and so City of SeaTac ordinances don't apply to it--any such pay raise would have to be proposed and approved by the Port of Seattle Board of Commissioners, who are elected.
The Port Commissioners probably will eventually vote to institute a $15/hr. minimum wage at the Airport, just to keep workers from leaving for higher-paying jobs across the street from the Airport in SeaTac (and in Seattle, whose southern city limit is just a few miles north of the Airport).
I notice that the Commissioners have just voted to give themselves a salary, the first time that Commissioners of any port on the west coast will receive a salary, amounting to about $18 per hour (plus per diem, and there are endless opportunities to make lucrative business deals on the side). See
http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2...ryxml.html
The only reason the Commissioners would vote themselves an $18-an-hour salary is so that their pay is higher than their employees'. Traditionally, Commissioners have all been wealthy, the job of Commissioner is just an excuse to travel and hobnob with the leaders of commerce in foreign countries, $18 an hour is lunch money to them.
I'm new around here, but thought I'd offer up an idea. I was in the Navy for 10 years and now I work in the Chicago-land area for Exelon, specifically at one of their nuclear power plants. While I might not completely understand the field your in, we have tons of OSHA, EPA, industrial safety/hygiene stuff. Maybe you're looking to get out of this area, but if you want I could check around for you a little? There are 4 nuke plants in the area and jobs at these places pay really well...
Applied and talked to their recruiters too. They're like "awesome!!! We will get the ball rolling with HR..!!" And I call back and all they can tell me is that I am on their radar. 80k starting sounded pretty nice
hey fyi you pm box is full as of yesterday.
80k starting?
awesome, hopefully you hear something back.
my impressions from my own job hunts is you hear things in batches. nothing for a while and you feel like shit, then suddenly 5 people want to hire you. with the special qualifications youve built, sooner or later the exact job will need you
personally i feel it doesnt hurt to be the squeaky wheel and call on a schedule on all the places you applied. especially if you do it polite, people remember.
doesnt hurt to be hungry. more than once ive hired contractors that called me for some premise, but really to see if i had money to give them
Recruiters a little more than skin traders and skin traders are little more than slavers. Avoid them like the plague if you can. However, if you can find a recruiter that specializes in your industry, they are usually worth their weight in gold.

Yeah, well it's something to keep in mind for later, too. Remember that regardless of where you get hired initially, part of the perks is that you're gaining job experience that you can leverage into an even better/different career later. When I applied, it was a couple months before I heard back. This is a pretty huge company and they're very deliberate with how they do stuff. Nothing gets rushed.

Anybody in North Dakota? Eh? Well I've been in limbo or pergatory for a few months playing hurry up and wait on a lot of things. Might get an offer from OSHA this week in Bismarck ND. Been going through their HR process, physicals, paperwork, etc.
Well I'm in North Dakota! First week at OSHA completed. Going to be a crazy job inspecting the oil fields. Lots of trucks rolling coal with turbos that sound like airplanes. Should be able to get a used holset around here pretty cheap ;-)

Deliveryvalve I think there's gonna be a bunch of hx40's and 50's coming on the market when all the California tractor trailers start getting junked because of emissions stuff
