Just a rant!
Just a rant!
so last night I ran out of fuel on the highway.
Fine, whatever.... Got my gf to get me and I got a container and filled it up with diesel. Get to the car add the fuel and prime that shit.
AIR! I couldn't get it out of the line. I kept pumping and pumping and pumping.
Finally I decided to crank it a few times.....battery dies.
at this point its 2AM, the cops have rolled around a few times telling me that I should tow it otherwise they will.
whatever, thanks for helping me out.
to save money on towing I go home charge the battery. Waited an hour, 4AM at this point, get back to the car. install the battery, crank it a few times
ALMOST! i almost get it to get going. One or two away from it starting......battery dies! UGH
at this point i give up. Im covered in diesel and its pouring out.
call a tow, but since Im on a Southern State Parkway only tow trucks that are contracted with the state can even drive a truck on there.
the only catch is, there's one company, so of course they charge an arm and a leg! $100 just for them to get there. $65 to mount it and then another $7.25 a mile!
holy shit.
luckily the guy saw how much of a mess I was and waived the $65 fee.
got home at 6am, charged the battery and then tried again, after the second crank, she fires right up.
so something that could have taken me ten minutes to put fuel in the car took me a few hours and a $140 bucks to get it towed only to have it start as soon as I get home.
Seriously man, does everything bad happen to me???
whatever, im over it though. I bought myself a mcgriddle and a coffee and im taking an easy day at work.
Moral of the story: dont be an idiot like me.
She's punishing you for letter her run out of fuel. These old Benz have feelings. If you hurt them they will punish you for it. I've learned never to say anything ill about a Mercedes around them it either cost a tone of money or a lot of blood sweat & tears. But that's how you know they have a Sole unlike a Camry

No i was gonna say to do exactly that if you hadnt been, but you already know the drill.
Sometimes events bite us in the ass i guess, do you have triple a?
If not, best investment you can make driving an old car.
One time i lost an axle, and trying to get the car off the road, i snapped a tie rod. I feel your pain

(04-04-2014, 01:58 PM)EmJay Ran into that on my 300 before I yanked the motor. Its actually what pissed me off and prompted me to do my diesel swap. My truck with the 602 uses an electric fuel lift pump, I get diesel to the IP in 2 seconds. Instant start

I dont, I was looking into roadside coverage from geico and triple a. The only issue is that most of these companies cant get onto most parkways here because of low bridge clearance. They need to have a special contract with the state and it usually just ends up being one company and they charge up the ass

(04-04-2014, 02:50 PM)JB3 Thats the beauty of triple a. It doesnt have to be an AAA truck, they will dispatch an affiliate or whatever. Ive used it all over the country. You get 5 free tows up to 200 miles with a gold membership, and its like pocket change per year.
Whether or not a truck would fit under the overpass is their problem. You dial the number on the card, they give you a time estimate for a truck. Chances are the one company you say can get on the highway would be the one dispatched

Take some words of advice from those pushing 50 ... lol.
I've been a AAA member since 1994 (at least my card says so). The 100 mile range was bumped up to 200 miles and it's $129/year for a family of 4 (all driving now) ... worth every single penny. I think I or my wife has called them twice in the last 2-3 years, and within minutes I or my wife received a response call, notice of when the truck will be there, and always pretty top notch service.
Guess what ... when you get home, you don't get a bill but a survey on how the service was, a "receipt" and a handful of business cards. I think it balances out to .30-some cents a day, give or take. I'm pretty happy with that.
So, compare .30 cents a day vs. your night of fun, fun, fun ... At least you got home and no one was injured.

(04-04-2014, 04:38 PM)Purplecomputer You guys are really making good arguments for getting AAA. With this car and my luck, I think it should be worth it.

Could even check your credit cards...some provide assistance like that. You may have forgot what you signed up for.

when I busted my axle and tie rod, I was on an end run trip from the midwest to southern CT and had been driving non stop for 1300 miles and was about as cracked out as you can imagine. Broke down in NJ about 150 miles from my destination.
Called AAA and had the car towed all the way back the 150 miles while I slept in the cab, clear across the NY metro area. I don't even want to guess what I would have paid out of pocket for that tow, wouldn't have been surprised if it neared a grand though.
took hours and hours with traffic. That was like 10 years of memberships right there, and the best part is I could do it 4 more times if need be that year.

Here is another plug for having AAA.
My wife and I lived in an area in LA where street cleaning happen every week. They would do one side on one day and the other the next day. If your car was parked during the time period of the cleaning, they would tow away and impound it.
So one day my wife went on a business trip to the east coast and she left with both sets of keys and her car parked on the street. The first day cleaning happened on the other side of the street. But I had to get the car moved for the next day's cleaning. The only thing I can think of was calling AAA towing to have it towed across the street.
The driver came, I told him the situation. He then hooked up my wife's car, drove it down the street, turned around and dropped it off exactly across of where it was before - About 35 feet away.
AAA saved me a bundle that day. I don't use it that often, I use the discounts a lot. I still definitely think it's worth it.
