I have a 716.630 mated to an om605 that I've fitted to the car.
The big selector rod needs to be shortened by 10cm which is no problem.
I'm a bit stuck with the cable at the side, it only ever seems to move when Reverse on the gear selector is selected.
I have bought 4 linkages and the bit between the cable and box is missing on all of them  Angry

Any help, is the cable required?

Yes, the cable is required.
On the end of the cable is an adjuster, although I doubt that with 100mm shortening you will be able to achieve this without shortening the cable itself.

the bracket on the side which receives the cable, runs through 2 pivot linkages and rotates through 90 degrees, to which a connecting rod joins the selector rod to the cable.

The purpose is to allow engagement of reverse and correct spacing of the H pattern, with the appropriate centre position.

IF the cable is not correctly set, the shift lever will make it all but impossible to select all gears. usually 5 & 6 go missing, because the cable prevents the full rotation of the selector arm.

Has anyone got around this or found a suitable shorter cable?
In the middle of trying to do this 6 speed swap into a w202 myself but came up against a brick wall with shortening the cable.

i cut the metal elbow off the cable to help with it.
I also got a small cable made up but the original with metal elbow cut off did a better job.

or look into the w204 shifter setup.
I may change to this when the gearbox is out.
Its a single bar that rotates for left and right instead of the cable section.

Hi,

if you fit a 716 Gearbox in an w201, you just take the Cable from an w208 CLK 230 with 6-Speed Gearbox.

Cost is about 30 € new at your local MB-Dealer.

Its a straigt bolt-on.

I also thought about it and I wanted to do it...but
How can you solve the fitting problem in the gearbox, the fit is different for the 2 shifter in gearbox..?
