Ah, this new car has a broken piece on the cable. The threaded plastic adjuster is smashed.
I wish I could get that ball off the end and replace the plastic bit. However it kinda looks like the whole cable and all needs to be swapped.
I have another one on my old trans. Do the cables come in varying lengths? Or does anyone have advice on this repair?

thats a nasty job, buddy. You've taken it apart already, right?

You could rig something up with parts from a bike store so that it is adjustable instead of replacing the whole thing.

I might have something, or at least a picture to give you an idea.

I guess I'll have a closer look at jerry rigging it. The cable is totally intact, just that threaded plastic piece is completely smashed.
Could probably make some sleeves of varying lengths to put where the threads would have been. Throw a piece of electrical tape around the sleeve and see how she shifts.

There is also no 3/2 vacuum valve for shifting. But boy it it floats down the road once in fourth.

I couldn't find what I was thinking of... but imagine this:

A male threaded end is attached to a female ferrule that accepts the bowden cable. (just like the busted plastic) A bike store that does repairs will have this and sometimes they have a big slit down the main axis to accept the steel wire.

Voila... you know the rest.


Sheet, come to think of it, older Volvos have the same thing on them for adjusting the throttle.(memory?)

Acts like my last one did when I would forget to plug the 3/2way vac switch in.
There is a way to delete it. I was under the hood today putting an EGR blockoff plate on and I may have messed with some vac connections. There is a mess in there.
Clunk on up and downshift. Where does that modulator on the trans need to get a signal from? Manifold pressure?

There is a way to delete it. I was under the hood today putting an EGR blockoff plate on and I may have messed with some vac connections. There is a mess in there.

Trans modulator can take a direct signal from the vacuum control valve (vcv)

Look on top of the valve, one of the ports should be labeled "trans"... if not, I'll hook you up.

edit** thars only one on top... got mixed up with something else. You should be able to send a straight shot from the top of the vcv. Something may need to be bypassed, not sure.... but my '85 does have extra garbage.


There will be a vacuum source from the brake booster line going to the top of the VCV as well as your line to the trans.

Yeah, this car is awesome. Got it for 1000 and it is very nice. little rust, has firstaid kit, etc.
Heater and blower motor just started to work. But the wipers stopped working. Have to track that issue too.
And a/c is unhooked, odometer doesn't work, tach sometimes does. Damn tape player doesn't work either.
But the paint is awesome windows and sunroof all open/close with great speed.

Those are top priority in my book. That and good compression or at least straight cylinders.

Everything else is DI- whizzey my nizzee.

Oh man... that paint IS nice. I don't think I have ever seen that color without flaking clearcoat. A steal!

Lets hope the vacuum is solvable.

Idea: go home and detail it for a few days... swirl remover, black trim plasticizer.. the whole nine.

....then take a trip over to friendly neighborman and as for an autograph ; )


or I guess you could just creep over there one night and take a bunch of shots while everyone snoozes (creepy!)
