Tail fish when going over bumps?

On my quest to restore my 240D slowly, ive noticed an annoying problem. Every time i go over bumps and ones that are fairly large, My car does a slight tail fish.
This problem is intermittent and does not happen all the time but does happen more and more often. there is also a nice clunking noise in the rear end when i go over these said bumps
all shocks are brand new and replaced about three to four months ago.
any ideas?

So i checked the sway bar and all the bushings and nothing looks bad to me, but take a look. I tried to get the best pictures as possible
They are only $20 for the set at most websites. Should I just replace them?

01-03-2012, 01:22 AM #12Those are rear sway bar bushings. I just happen to have a rear sway bar beside me (finger is pointing to a bushing). If dry-rotted, by all means replace it. Might not be the whole solution though.

That - if any (which is what would cause some tail fish
) should be the fault of the rear arms bushes - which should look very bad.Look at the rear wheels - rear arms, and the point they're mounted on the chassis. There's bushes galore, and quite big ones.

A bit of dry rot never hurt anyone - from the pics, I think they're fine. Plus, the sway bar only allows the rear arms to move up and down together, which is good when cornering, as it will keep a wheel on the ground. However, they're not responsible for allowing any kind of side-movement of the rear axle assy.

But wait. Have you tried standing on the side of the car and push/pull on it in the rear? It may be easier to open the trunk so you can grab the edge and shake. The only side to side movement you should get is the wheel moving in the tire.
With my El Camino, (has large rear tire with lots of sidewall) I am always surprised at how far the wheel moves side to side in the tire. But the suspension should not have ANY side to side movement!

Yeah those are all cracked and dry rotted. im going to replace those
