diesel engine lenghts?
diesel engine lenghts?
om616-?
om617-?
om601-?
om603-?
om605-?
om606-?
I hear great things about the motor available in the 1987 300tdt which a om606 i believe.
i currently own a om617 :/ (lazy iron dinosaur)
what is the length of these motors in comparison?
what are the tangible(cost effective) modified hp levels of these diesels?
300 or 350 before Rods start bending.

There is no wrong way to take this: You need to be reading, not posting.

I must say that it would be good to have a side by side comparision.
Say no internal engine mods
stock ip, but with better tuning
intake and exhaust mods
Then of course all out, do everything possible , max it can take without breaking.
I really should dyno mine just to see were I am at. To many other things to do.....
"Then of course all out, do everything possible , max it can take without breaking."
There are endless opportunities to get to these different goals very hard to estimate correctly.
Yes to reach max power there are differant ways to a certain extent, however there will be similarities, and each engine will have a point to which basically it is not worth trying for more, at least with a stock short block. An example is the 617a. I have found that there seems to be agreement that 40 psi boost or so is the max with stock rods and pistons. Rod bending happens at higher boost for this engine. I do not remember what the hp typically is at this power level. But this clearly shows the approximate limit for the 617. Each engine must have it's limits, and it would be nice to see side by comparision.
By what I take out of my studying many different facets of diesels, there is no real "PSI Limit". Now, before I hear the grumbles, check this out...
Total cylinder pressure is where it's at. IT will bend rods.
Bore
Stroke
Squish volume
Static compression
Timing
Volume of fuel injected
QUALITY (speed & atomization) of injection
And always vacuum or boost...
In my new world (24V Cummins) there is quite a variance of "Boost limits" due to ALL of the above issues. Some pop head gaskets at 30 PSI, some get up to 45 PSI with stock gaskets & bolts. It's all in the total setup...

I think what we are looking for is not a fixed hp number for each engine but an approximate range that could be typically reached.
Yes total cylinder pressure is really the figure, however most do not have any way to get that. generally the higher the boost the higher the cylinder pressure for a given engine.
