Hi all,

I'm obviously new here. I've had a few mercs in my life, but this is my first diesel.

I haven't bought a car yet, but I'm deciding between either a W124 OM603 non-turbo and a W210 OM606 turbo. These are the only diesel models we got in Australia for their respective series.

Anyhow, first off which would you suggest is the better more reliable model?

What sort of fuel consumption are you guys getting out of your OM603/606T?

What mods do I need to do to get the OM606 up to 250-300hp? Without effecting fuel consumption too greatly.

Is it hard to turbo a OM603?

I look forward to your help.

I think that if $ is of little influence then, the 606 is the obvious choice.
A turbo motor is better than a non turbo for example.

Rusted out beat down 300d turbo 82' -- RIP
Nice body, tons of ridiculous mechanical issues - 300d turbo 82' /motor 85'

That's what I was thinking... W124 300D here in Aust are only slightly cheaper then a W210 E300DT anyway! It was more the issues related to the rest if the W210 that bothered me.

As stated by Jack Baruth, writer for The Truth About Cars, "Mercedes-Benz should formally apologize for the W220 and W210. Every customer who purchased a new S-Class or E-Class from those infamously troubled generations should receive a letter in the mail, hand-signed by Dr. Panzer Kampf-Wagen or whoever is running the show nowadays, apologizing for selling them an utter piece of junk. Hundreds of thousands of customers were basically swindled. They thought they were buying a Mercedes-Benz, not a cost-cut half-plastic embarrassment. Make it right. And throw them a little incentive towards the price of a new (and presumably better) Benz, just to make up for the abysmal resale on, say, the 2001 S430."

My choice would be to buy the W124 and put a 606 turbo in it. Then you will have the best body and the best engine without to much hassle from the electronics.

That'd be nice! I don't have the time or the workshop for that though..

Remember in W210 300TD the 5spd A/T is only rated up to 370Nm from stock.

So building a engine with reasonably more power will in most situations also have way more torque, more than this gearbox in stock conditions can handle.

This was the reason I decided against the OM606 in W210 and went for the CDI which has stronger gearbox...

Mercedes Benz W210 E-Class 320CDI, lowered 2.5", 18" AMG wheels, Decat, EGR removed, Tumble flaps removed, C30 AMG injectors, 400kpa MAP, Custom GT2566XTV turbo, SW tweaked to 300+hp/750NmBig Grin

Ahhhh ok, I didn't know that!

We don't get the 320 CDi here in Aust though, only the 270. Did they have the stronger 'box also?

IIRC 270CDI has same gearbox but slightly different ratio of rear differential.

What manual gearbox would you attach to a 606 running 300bhp? I was thinking w201 2.5 cosworth box? Anything else I could use?

220CDI 6spd seems to work fine :-)
