I've been away from this site for a while, but definitely not away from diesels.

My daily driver is still a '93 W201 Mercedes with an OM602 turbo and 5-speed drivetrain.

About 2 years ago, I started in on a diesel land speed racing project (1.5L VW turbodiesel in a Dodge Rampage truck). I was hoping to be at the Bonneville Salt Flats right now, but we have been rained out until the next meet (World Finals in October).

Anyway, I'm already daydreaming about the next potential project, which I'm envisioning as a '94-up Chevy S10 with an OM606 turbo / Superpump type setup.

Trying to think through the issues I might encounter with a project like that (will the engine physically fit, what type of transmission should be used, etc). In terms of transmissions, I'd consider anything from an MB 5-speed manual, to an MB 4-speed auto, to a GM turbohydro automatic, to whatever!

Just thinking out loud right now, and looking for your thoughts as well.

The inline engines are tall, so you might have to mess with the front suspension (I'm not familiar with 2WD S10s).


If you want it to be easier, use a GM transmission coupled to HD u-joints. the rubber merc flex joints are a failure point.

The 606 will scream wiht an aftermarket exhaust manifold and larger turbo/ IP. Excellent choice

I currently have a 1.5L VW diesel installed in this truck, and would like to build a 1.9L VW to run in the next larger class as well.

The next larger displacement break comes at 3.0L, which is where the OM606 S10 would come in. Coupled with a GM transmission and all the suspension options for this type of vehicle, I think I could build a pretty nice one for less than I have in my Rampage pictured above.

The thing about an S10 that's so attractive is that they are cheap and plentiful. They are also a solid base for building as a performance platform. Searching Craigslist in my area, I can find examples as low as $500 with bad engines.

That makes it tough to justify traveling any significant distance for an S10 that would be serving mainly as a "roller" donor anyway.

I agree that its a great platform to build from. I also agree that you should find line of those $500 S-10s! Mine is road ready and has a stupid high bluebook value. I don't understand how they hold their value so well.

Have you considered an early Jeep CJ as a chassis? It's what I'm going to be using. It's already setup for a straight 6 and can be made very lightweight.

What I'd like to do is run at Bonneville & Wilmington, OH in the F/DT class, which is F (engine size 2-3 Liters), DT (Diesel Truck). I'm getting ahead of myself, but it doesn't cost anything to daydream.

So, it pretty much needs to be a "letter of the law" truck to meet the rules of the sanctioning bodies. The Rampage is just about the smallest thing that fits the land speed racing definition of a truck.

The downside is that I would not be allowed to convert the Rampage from FWD to RWD to run in the larger engine sizes. I can figure out how to run in the 2 liter class, but just thinking ahead, it would be extremely difficult to get a 3 liter diesel mounted in the Rampage's engine compartment and retain the FWD arrangement.

That's why I'm just brainstorming about the S10 / OM606 combination.

The only thing that I worry about with your idea is that the length of the engine. My build, for example, is a OM602 in a Mazda B2000. The size of the engine bay between my Mazda and an S-10 are pretty similar, maybe 3 inches MAXIMUM difference. The I-5 engine fit in my engine bay nice and snug, but I had to push the radiator up INTO the cowl instead of mounted ON the cowl. I am having a hard time seeing the 6 cylinder fitting in there without firewall modifications.

who cares if a brat is AWD, they can be converted to RWD pretty easily. Just use a GM transmission and diff and boom.

Firewall mods are allowed. As a matter of fact, there's a team running a 6cyl Cummins in an S10 at Bonneville (larger displacement class, obviously)
