I am engineering my own oil by-pass filter system. I am going to feed the filter by adpating a distribution block to the OEM oil pressure port. The block will have a port for the OEM oil pressure sending unit, a port for a pressure switch ( Electric fuel pump circuit ) and a port to feed the by-pass filter.

I am looking for a spot to dump the oil, I can drill and tap the upper pan, but I just changed the gasket on the lower pan a month ago.

I found a plug on the front of the engine above the vacuum pump and to the left of the power steering pump. What is it for? can I use it to dump the oil.



How many of you have a by-pass filter and how did you do it?

Its the timing chain idler gear shaft. (98a)

I thought about tapping the filter housing, but I like to keep everything in a state that one day it can be put back to original. Even with the mods I did to the turbo, everything can be back to OEM in a matter of hours. Obviosly the turbo drain cannot, but that is how they should have done it - silly GermansTongue

I don't want to drill and tap my valve cover. I have a lot of hours smoothing and sanding as well as my pretty paint jobRolleyes

That may be a good spot to use, I could maintain a steady supply of oil feed to the pump. I know it is getting oil, but I want to ensure it is steady like the MW. I was going to make a billet bottom cover with fins and a port to supply oil, but this idea may work better.

How do you like the system?

Can you notice a difference in the look of the oil?

I was looking at the FS2500 system, but I imagine it is quite pricey. It looks great, but alas I am a skpetic and must see for myself and I also like to do my own fab work. I am going to use a 3 micron filter that is available at McMaster-Carr. The filter housing and filter is about $ 35.00 and replacement filters are about $15.oo.

So-So. There is no visible difference in the oil but it does reduce soot content according to my oil tests. I added a neodymium magnet from a hard drive to the filter bottom for extra metal-catching ability. I also put one on the oil pan drain plug since I can't find a replacement plug with one in it.

Very. My system uses a $12 oil filter base, $35 Amsoil filter and about $40 in hose and fittings.

After getting a cut in hours (temporay I hope), I decided to keep the project on the cheap. I remembered seeing a filter housing in the garage and dug it out. It turned out to be a Frantz Filter circa 1965 ( a TP filter for those that don't know). My dad bought it when he had his first Corvair and paid about $40.00 back in the day.

I needed a little cleaning and polish, but otherwise was complete. I had to extend the inner pipe - someone cut at one time.

Here are some pics of the install:

I ended up changing the dump location for the by-pass filter. The pump was filling up to fast and it ended up damaging the fuel cutoff vacuum actuator.

I decided to go with my original plan and use the plug on the front of the motor.

I drilled out the plug and tapped it for M12 x 1.5 threads. I did not machine the face as it looked as though it made contact with idler shaft - maybe for some additonal support?

I also added a couple of reliefs to make sure the oil had some place to go just in case the shaft did not allow it to flow freely, so far so good.

I just looked up the oil filters for the Merc, and noticed they were canister. Don't know why I keep thinking mercs are spin-ons
