Well im wondering since i have to choose between buying a new watercooler with intergrated ATF cooler.

Or to buy a ATF cooler to mount seperatly along with the oilcooler?

Wich one is the most efficient?

Proper air cooler with electric fan is more effective, all performance models like 55AMG uses separate oil cooler for ATF. It is needed only on racetrack, internal ATF cooler will be fine also. Good thing with separate ATF cooler is also that it makes engine cooling more efficent, internal ATF cooler is heating water inside radiator which is flowing back to engine block.

Hi!

All OM603/606 Turbo cars (also 400E/E420) with factory tow-bar and factory air-condition had fitted air-atf cooler in right front wheel well, with electric cooling fan (controlled by temperature switch). The temperature differential between air and ATF is much higher then between coolant and ATF - and therefore the air-cooler will be much more efficient. And as ERX pointed out, the heat intake to he engine coolant will also decrease and leave more capacity for engine cooling.

IMO it's sensible to decouple both circuits...

They are fucking expensive, though... Something like 6-700€ for the cooler alone (new)! Without all the ancilliaries. All W124 Turbodiesel chasis I have seen have the brackets to mount this pre-welded to the body.

Google: 8MO 376 747-201 that is ATF cooler used for some w211 and other models. It includes 80C thermostat and price is about 160€.

I did read tho on a forum for American cars that one of the good things about using an internal oil cooler is that the gearbox oil will get up to the right operating temp faster.

But that w211 cooler that has an integrated thermostat should be perfect!

I have both oil cooler and ATF cooler as standard on my W210 E300 turbodiesel estate, I am keeping the ATF cooler stock but uprating the OEM oil cooler.

My UK spec estate with a tow bar has fans on both transmission and engine oil cooler - guessing my car is opposite to yours being 100kg heavier and having a tow bar.

I've been watching some foot-square sized used Mocal coolers go on the ebay for about £30-40, to mount as per the stock 210 engine oil cooler, though I'll be mounting one each side, for atf also. Just a thought.
How do you plan to thermostat the fan, if at all?
