On my OM605 the tensioner makes noise at something like 1000 rpm. It's quite a rattle. The tensioner pulley seems to flop around when it makes noise. I've unscrewed the top shock mounting bolt and the rubber spacer behind the upper shock mount was completely. So i've made my own, by cutting open and drilling through a piece of fuel hose Idea . The rattle is reduced but it's still there.I think the upper mount has too much play and that it is the problem. The shock is hard to extend and extremely hard to compress by hand, so i think it's working properly. The shock gets quite hot after a while  Exclamation

Is there supposed to be a bushing at the upper shock mount. The bolt seems to be quite loose in the hole, dunno if normal ??

Hy Petar,
usually the rattle is caused by the arm hinge, weather u replace it by a MB spare or u go in a machine shop as ask them to make a bushing , it must be very tight. engine vibrations usually drive the bolt in the tight sense, so play is something odd.

This arm hinge you mean number 17 in this picture ??

yes the 17 is the bolt, but it slides in a bushing , wich over time develop play , then it starts to ratlle. usually a aftermarket parts dont solve the assle, in my experience only MB part do the job or a machine shop made bushing, whatever is cheapest and fastest... (sometimes the bolt is not round anymore wich worsens the thing)

To test the pulley clutch, loosen the belt. Grab the pulley by hand and twist is back and forth. It should slip in one direction and catch in the other. It is OK if it is a bit stiff, but it does have to slip.

Another thing to check is the loop ends of the belt shock absorber. The rubber can shrink a bit and bounce around in the loop. The fix for that is cheap: lock the end in a vice and make the loop a little smaller with a hammer.

You have dead alternator pulley. It is qiet on idle but when you raise it a bit it will go like TRRRRRRRRR and then around 1300RPM suddenly dissapears?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ex: 525tds 130kW, C250TD 160kW, E320CDI 200kW, ML400CDI 230kW, A6 R5TDI 130kW
Now: Q7 V8TDI 240kW, 320d 150kW, 335d 210kW

You are EXACTLY correct that is the problem. Will test the alternator pulley as soon as possible. Need to make something to pull the spring holder so i can relieve belt tension. What tool do you use for this ?

You just remove nut (119) Then you use a big screwdriver or a metal bar or something that fits in the hole in (83) and pull it up so you can pull out the bolt (113) done Smile

Well idiot which previously owned car replaced alternator with one without one-way pulley. I changed that hydraulic tensioner, no use.. belt still flapped and made noise. Then replaced pulley and no noise no belt flapping around. Costs like 30€.

yes u can , have a bar playing lever alike stretching the drive belt , then u search the condition that stops the rattle,  i seriously dought the alternator has anything to do with it , but since i never seen a alternator with that kind of puley.... it might be the problema  thoug.

Main cause is usually shock bushes, I've had this problem with many cars and they all had shock end bushes loose and rattling.

yep that is correct , also very often replacing the shock does not solve the matter, when this happens most probably the bushing inside the arm is beating and , screaming....

I had the just off idle rattle on my W210, I guess it was the alternator pulley because a few weeks later when driving there was a big clunk and overheating. When I checked the alternator pulley and belt were completely gone, pulley sheared off.. New one fixed the rattle..

Installed:

OM606/722.6, big IC, W220 brakes.
Planned:
DIY manifold, compound, 722.6 controller, built IP.
[i]Less rust..

As far as I'm aware they have only been used with alternator outputs above 90A. I've fitted them to all alternators, though.

I think they are talking about a free-wheeling pulley Smile I've only seen them on alternators bigger than 90A output.

Thinking about it again there is nothing that draws a lot of current in this car:
1. The cooling fan is mechanical
2. There is no electric coolant heater like on the CDI's

Afterglow is only on for like 30-60 seconds max.

Come to think of it again i think my problem could be the upper shock mount bushing. The bolt seems kinda loose in there. Call me cheap but i'm not really willing to buy the entire shock just because the upper bushing is worn. I might try wrapping the bolt with a piece of rubber. See if it helps.

If you are talking about the belt shock, the cheap solution is to put the end of the shock in a vise then hammer the loops a little smaller.

hehe, if u want MB packaged belt , u can ask the part number in the MB dealer, if u want a "continental" made in china, the have size correlation tables.
Regarding the MB part number , sorry can´t help u with the EPC , but there are forum members who have it.

about the bellt, release the tensioner use a 3/4 inch rope around the place where the belt shoud be, measure, search aftermarket stores for a belt this size. even if it 4 lanes will suit.

(09-19-2016, 07:49 AM)pryantcc I found that the belt from my 1992 W201 2.0L 190D fitted the OM-606 nicely once it had its air con removed, if that helps?

Cheers buddy. Much appreciated.

I CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME REMEMBER THE COMPANY I GOT MY BELT FROM, THEY MAKE all sorts of belts, sorry caps.

But the last 4 digits is the length in milimeters, and the number and two letters is the type, so Mercedes type is '6PK'.

SO My 606 belt is something like I think '6PK2070'. (2070mm & 6-rib).

Installed:

OM606/722.6, big IC, W220 brakes.
Planned:
DIY manifold, compound, 722.6 controller, built IP.
[i]Less rust..

One of my buddies made a modification with brass bushing and needle bearings. He had lots of problems with the aftermarket parts so made one. Needle bearing is much better than bushing.......
I will make mine like that also, so I will make some pictures of it....

When I added an over running pulley to my om606 (90a) I was able to run the belt without a dampner and the belt was running smoothly. I reinstalled the dampner but its there more for show than anything. The OAP is very effective.
