I'm developing a spin on oil filter do to clearance issues. What should I do with the central tube that conects to the housing lid, I understand an air bleed.  It or leave it open?

Are you using the OEM base that attaches to the block? If so, you will need to plug the passageway that the tube plugs into. If I recall correctly (it has been a few years sense I did mine) I made a plug with an o-ring that I slid in (horizontally) somewhere behind the cover plate. A If you leave it open, oil will by pass the filter and go back through that passage to the crankcase making the oil pressure SUPER low if non existent.

The system is designed so the top half of the oil filter is a bypass section, where a part of the oil flow goes through a tiny hole in the tube and returns to the crankcase. I think there might be a check valve in the system to stop air getting in and draining the entire filter housing out. (at least that's my theory going by my car and its oil pressure building delay with my turbo oil supply)

Silly question but why not use the OEM filter housing and relocate it? It's something that certainly helps the life of these engines.

I literally have no room in my engine compartment. And not much room anywhere else for that matter.

Someone on here was making some aluminum plates for relocating the original oil filter housing. Maybe you can find the source. Very important to retain the function of the original oil filter housing.

Relocation is not an option. There's nothing special about the Mercedes drop in cartridge. The only piece I'll be replacing is the cartridge with a spin on element. I'll just have to make sure flow is at least  equal.

My solution. It retains all the functionality of the factory unit but allows for alot of aftermarket options such as; 90* adapters, bypass oil systems, turbo feeds and sending units.
