Hello.

The previous owner took out the diesel pump without setting the engine correctly. Is it possible to put the pump in the wrong way?

I'm pretty sure I turned the engine correctly put it in at the right stroke etc before I put it in.

Yes, most comon error is 180° apart... other also common is turning engine leftway and pump end up in the wrong time.
Usually the engine is set at 14.5 ° ATDC in the power stroke of cyl 1. (Check it in the cam gear mark) lock pump with lock tool ant slide it in.
It should start... once it starts fine tune by listening engine or with timming light.
Good luck

Hmm will have to check this.

I did open the oil cap and looked for the mark and turned clockwise until 14.5° when I put it in.

The previous owner took it out because the car just stopped. He was an alcoholic so I have no idea what happened or what he did. I got a spare pump that have been working and put that in.

Atm I'm getting smoke out of the egr pipe but it's not firing yet. I just replaced all the lines and the filter yesterday. I primed the filter and all the lines have fuel. But the line from the pre heater to the pre filter is empty.

Anyone know why that would be?

Could be air leak.

Can't really see where that airleak would be since I changed all the lines.

I took the line to the prefilter directly into a can of diesel now. Will have a look at the timing tomorrow. Still some smoke comming out.

But if the timing is incorrect (180°) as stated above, wouldn't the chambers be flooded with diesel?

It would run but very bad. I have tryed both 180 wrong and 270 wrong. Could drive with the car both times. The 270 was pump builder that zeroed the pump with fourth cylinder on my om605.

The picture shows how all the parts are aligned at 0 degrees at the top of the compression stroke of cylinder #1. The pin is used to test for chain wear. With a new chain the pin should slide right into the hole on cam gear. As the chain wears the cam is delayed. One turns the crankshaft (always forward, clockwise) until the pin slides in and then looks to the crankshaft indicator to see how many degrees of wear have occurred.

What isn't shown is the orientation of the gear that drives the injection pump. You can see that gear by removing the vacuum pump.

Okay. So to get the timing on my engine correctly I should take of the valve cover. Do the procedure above and then turn the crank to 14.5° and put in my pump again?

Tried cranking again and only smoke. I'm pretty sure the timing is waaay off like someone stated earlier.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I've redone the timing now. I think I was able to do it correctly. But I've got a really bad idle and it's really rough. Is this bad timing or could there be something else wrong? Also produces a lot of smoke!

The engine has been standing still for about 2 years. Could it just be that it needs to run a little and get all the vapor/condensation in the engine out?

Two years stopped in wich conditions? In a vehicle with all liquids in , oils, coolant etc? Or in a shelf bleeded of all liquids?
One thing is that most probably(95%) the rings are glued in piston grooves, so running the engine in heating cycles may help to clear them, that is cause for white smoke and harsh idle. People say that injection of water help cleaning the carbon and ...
Not to profetise but, it might well need some rebuilding...

Yes in a vehicle with oil, water, etc etc. An alcoholic was the owner and the engine just stopped. I purchased it veery cheap from a friend of mine with hopes yo get the engine running.

So yeah I'm aware it might need some work. I have a water injection kit laying around I could try to use.

I will leave the engine running until it gets warm a few times. Give it some revs and see if it clears up.

All feedback is appreciated. Smile

Measure compression, if u can... all cylinders should be more less same... if under 10/13 bar a lot more than stuck rings should be expected. If diff over 5 bar btw cylinders may lead to headgasket... u see MB are week from headgaskets, a drunk fwlla usually is only inyerested in boose, so its very likely u bought a white elephant.... despite cheap...

As stated above, that is abnormal amount of crankcase blowby. worse than any OM606 I've seen. If you are lucky this is stuck rings. So far I've been able to break them loose with hard driving: Foot to the floor under load, decelerate to idle, do it again. There may be some chemical cures.

The breathing is almost gone now so I think the problem was stuck piston rings as someone suggested above.
However if you look in the first clip you can see some oil around where the injectors goes in.

I had some oil squirting out of these holes before I removed the oil separator. So I took a close up now as the breathing is considerably less. And you can see around the injectors some bubbling when I block the ventilation with my finger.

Anyone know what this leak is? Yes I know the obvious answer would be to remove my finger. But I'm afraid maybe some o ring or something has blown out due to the amount of pressure that it had earlier.

In the injector well u have a kind of trompet, sealed by two O ring . the lower O ring is usually vuiton and very resistant but the above seals between valve cover and the trompet is not the best solution neither the ring... have a look of course with cankcase pressure it has to go somewhere....
