I have been trying to research a few things. I have a engine swap going into my 83 s10 I have a engine from a 87 300sdl. I see it is somewhat electronic and uses a engine control unit. I am wondering if I can not use the computer? I have the entire car but I want to keep this as mechanical as possible. I am asking for advise Thankyou! If you wonder why a diesel especially a mercedes diesel in a s10, the reason is why not I picked the car that runs for $600.00

You'll read about the coarse idle screw, you can adjust it to get the idle near 750rpm and at that point the computer will no longer be needed.

Find an alternator shop in your area - they should be able to modify your alternator (especially a GM/Delco alternator) to output a tach signal.
