Hi friends, as we know there is a lot W124 diffs info, but no so much in W210 models.

See the 2,82 from 270CDI Aut 2002,  (manual uses 2,65),   300TD  uses 2,87 and 320 CDI uses the 2,65. These I think for Europe market, but no sure.

These diffs are 210mm ring diameter? somes are direct fit to W124 (and they uses the 110mm 3-leg yoke), and others have a different rear cover with an left fitting point to subframe, but rear cover can be swaped , no problem.

In mind have fit that 2,82 with 6 Merc gearbox from W204 CDI,  0,828    6th gear ratio,   it can give aprox 51,5Km/h   @ 1000 rpm in 6th   with  225/45-17 tyres. For a cruising speed of 120-130Km/h engine is between 2400-2500.

The 2,65   0,828  225/45-17 gives very close to 55Km/h @ 1000 rpm  in 6th gear,   cruising 120-130 engine is 2200-2400, can be good for stock engines with max torque from 1600rpm, but in my opinion I prefer that 2,82.

I've got a 2.82 diff from a w210 in my w124, all I did to fit it was to swap the rear covers over. But it is worth mentioning that the w210 doesn't have a abs sensor mounted in the diff, so your abs will not be working.

I'm using the 716.648 and with a 2.82 diff it feels like it's geared too low. I'm looking for a 2.65 from a w124 which is what my friend is using.

I think the USA market mainly had m104's with a 2.65 ratio's, friends tell me they are common there. I'm in the UK so most m104's were 3.06 or 3.65. The w210 300td was a 2.87 here also.

My diff came from a 1997 w210 e420 with a m119, it is the same as the w124 diffs except the abs sensor. The later w210 like e320cdi has a larger diff which wont fit into a w124, the ring gear is 210mm but is thicker so cannot swap into an early case. W211 also used this diff.

With the 2.82 I have now, I start in 2nd gear. 1st is too low to be needed unless on a steep hill, so I need to gear it up with a 2.65.

Ok, see here a W124 400i V8 diff, with ABS sensor (Sunday I could take my car from parking at street), rear cover must be swaped, 4 point yoke and it is 2,65, no know if driveshaft coupler-CV joint are 95mm or the bigger ones from E500, can be 102,5mm bolt circle?.

Here no see 2,65 in M104 engines, need very lucky to see one USA version, only 3,06, could be possible swap that V8 2,65 ring and pinion into a 3,06 diff, fitting the 3 yoke 110mm and the 95mm driveshafts couplers-CV joints diff side.But need (if possible) buy 2 diffs.
I´ll see housing ref. of both diffs.

I would expect your 300td has the medium case 185mm diff, so to swap in a 210mm you will need to change the drive shafts and the propshaft.

2.65 is the desired ratio for a 6 speed, so get that if you can. The 4 bolt yoke can be swapped for a normal m104 3 bolt.

Not understand why Merc fitted that very low 1 st gear ratio, 5,01 !!!! in the 6 speed manual (somes have a 4,xx ratio), can be practical for a heavy cargo van in a hill, as the Sprinter, but for a car is a wasted gear. The old 717 common gearbox has a 3,85 1st gear and a 0,799 5th gear.
Years ago Volvo used a 4 speed + Overdrive ....now Merc uses 5 speed + Underdrive!!!!!!

I think they do that so the manual and auto gearboxes can use the same diffs, that way they only need to make 2 or 3 diff ratios rather than 5 or 6.

If you want a laugh years ago when I first started to play with the 6 speeds nobody really knew what the ratios were, so it was a case of trial and error. The first time I used the 6 speed was behind a 300-24 m104 in a 190e, it still had the original 3.91 diff in the car. You could go up through the gears like a rally car, the engine would scream around to the rev limiter no matter what gear it was in, and I'd be surprised if the the thing could do 100mph. 
The lower gears were a joke but around the country back roads it was seriously fast.  Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
