Hello Guys

I am kinda new here, have been reading stuff in here for a while now but never really wrote in here before.

I am currently looking for a Daily driver and was tending to preferably getting a fairly rust free W210, has to be a Wagon, Manual, and a Turbodiesel for personal preferences, sadly around here there arent many W210s with those specs, so that only really leaves me with the 290 Turbodiesel or the 220 CDI.

Now, there is enough info around for modifiying the OM611, but what about the 2.9l OM602 with direct injection? can the injection system even be tuned by yourself? i know there are chiptuners aroudn thet claim 30-40hp with just a tune. I also know the longer stroke 3.5l Version of the 603 isn't to great for tuning because of the rods bending, so what about the 2.9l om602, does it have the same Prolbems? What Power can be acchieved with a fairly sensilbe budget on one? Are parts form the normal OM602 plug and play or what should i look out for?

Thank you for any info on this, i tried searching for the answers, but for most i can only really find very rough guestimations and nothing fairly solid.

The direct injection 2.9 uses a VP37 injection pump. I have tuned a few of them with the DSL1 ECU. About 170 horsepower is possible on the stock injection pump with an upgraded turbo, the OM606 turbocharger bolts right up to the 2.9 exhaust manifold.
The direct injection engine has much stronger rods than the 3.5 603. I am in fact using a set of those rods in my 2.9 prechamber engine and they are holding up at 500 horsepower.
The weak link is going to be the head gasket, but nothing to worry about with the stock injection pump.

If it's a VP37, would i be correct in assuming that i could get the pump upgraded at a shop that also tunes VW PD engines?
Also, what would be needed to get to Reliable 200~250hp? Om606 Turbo, Intercooler, Upgraded Pump+Tune, EGR Delete, possibly a Headgasket, Possibly a full exhaust system and most likely a Clutch?

Yes to all of the above, except PD is very different, the older VE pumps on the 90s TDI engines use the same pump heads as the VP37.

alright then, thank you, that was all i wanted to know for now.

Still not quite sure if it's gonna be an S210, after all i barely know anything when it's about the older Mercedes Diesels, i have a descend bit of knowledge when it comes to HDI Tuning, but and i want to try something different and for Winter would like to maybe have a RWD car for a bit more fun.

might also look into the BMW 2.5l Diesels.
