Had a good score at pick yer part today, pulled a set of w114 euro bumpers, a Momo bmw steering wheel, ford 9", and made a pretty cool discovery. I found a 280c with a full cloth interior in good condition. I may go back if someone wants it or hold onto it for good luck. The w114 was a 220d and had a M-pump if anyones interested. One sad discovery was the pimp my ride 300sd, it was a disgusting pink, had a 1/4" of bondo all over, and a white/fur interior. Turbo was still good though.

I sized up the bumpers and they will fit with minor mods, or someone can trade me a set of 123's. Wink

'78 300D, OM617.912: 4spd manual, TB03 at 10PSI, 26*BTDC, DV's turned, HVAC, emissions system removed, e-fan, short ram, 3" downpipe to straight exhaust, W126 Bendix brakes, MR2 Spyder seats. 2890lbs

I saw that episode, of all the great things they could have done, they come up with that. Those "restore your car in record time" shows are a joke, all they do is promote hack jobs to finish on time, and especially with pimp my ride, stuff that basically has no resale value. Who would buy that car now?

I did like overhaulin' though, still think its a little too quick for a really lasting job if there is any bondo work, but the designs are really tasteful and attractive IMO.

The difference is between seeing a car for personal appreciation or as a public spectacle.

If I remember correctly, they came up with a horrific rotating hood ornament, you should grab those parts if they are still there. Mechanically, might be some interesting parts to have

Aw, come on dropnosky, you could always drive it home, take some pictures, and make enough money off of eBay and craigslist selling that crap to goofball hoodrats to buy a real car Big Grin.

Obviously for 'a certain audience'. I love the episode of The Boondocks that has Pimp My Ride on, thought it was a great parody. It's for people for whom the now old school Playstation install was the most mind-blowing automotive modification they'd ever seen...

Having worked in a body shop, I'd say Overhaulin' probably does their homework and gets decent junkyard parts in advance of the show. Once the part is in primer no one on TV can tell it's not the 'fixed' original panel. PMR, on the other hand, I'm sure that bodywork has all of the quality of an "I need my limo back in 8 hours" special. (That's a fun day at work, of course one can always just look for the requisite coke mirror stashed near the driver's seat Big Grin.)

You are right! Ive painted enough of my own cars with spray paint that I really shouldn't knock this car.

I'm sure we all went through the "flat black" stage. Although for me, I thought that you could turtle wax flat black paint to achieve an intoxicated induced form of 'semi-lustre'. Nope, in fact its hard to make a car look worse without actual physical body damage.

Is this pink gem still complete? or has it been stripped of its valuable bling?

Man, if I wasn't concerned with flying under the radar, you guys would have already given me shit about my flat black 240D. Well, that, and I live in the desert, so you can imagine how that works out. Mexican blanket seat covers, goofy foot gas pedal (check!), gloss red 'steel look' aluminum wheels from a later hubcap car with beauty rims and chrome 'nuts. There's worse things you can do with an old beat up 123. And it would be light years cooler than that giant block of solid cotton candy.

Flat black has to be done right. Start out with about 20 cans of 99 cent Home Depot flat black (I'm constantly buying those) as a base coat and once you have a decent base, topcoat with the best rattle can stuff you can get. Heat up some water in a pot, place the cans in the pot and let them get warm (I've actually had the flame going under the pot with four cans in it, just don't get stoned and chase a butterfly around the yard while that's going!) and the paint will come out much better - the higher temp lets the paint mix and flow better, and the higher pressure in the can results in a better spray pattern. The only way to fly when spraying in cold weather.

I wonder if the Brightside marine paint could have a flattening agent added to it for a 'roll on' flat black. Although, really, I'd probably just do the extra bodywork and go gloss black at that point.

But yeah, flat black done wrong will make a perfectly good car look like a burnt out shell from a third world war zone. I'd add up the cost of rattle canning a car - you might be able to get a local body shop to hose your car down with black Urethane primer for a similar amount, and it'll look way better, less work on your part, and if you decide to go gloss later just wetsand it flat and get to it. Urethane, not Lacquer - the lacquer primer doesn't seal against water. Even in LA you'll start getting rust spots over time.

Yeah, boss had one on an old Ford van, and I swiped it - can't picture a more appropriate accessory for a 240D Wink.

I consider it an era appropriate performance accessory - helps with the heel-toe work.

Edit: LOL, the user name is "Filty Rich"
Edit2: This guy left a lot of data on there. He is lucky I found it instead of some punk that would try to steal his ID.

I found a wal-mart gift card with $19.65 under the back seat of a 420SEL.

Pull-n-save has a Volvomino.

Also a Mazda Millenia Miller cycle engine. I was going to pull the supercharger but it didn't rotate freely.

Ah huh? what do we have here?....

"Achtung: Spezial-Ol Sperrdifferential" ???

Open the cover....

We have LSD Clutches!

I picked this up past weekend. It's a 2.47, but unfortunately it is in a 2nd Gen w126 flavor. Hmmm now what to do with it... Put it in a 2nd gen w126? Play around with it and transfer the guts to a 1st Gen housing? Sell it? It most likely would need big buck clutches since the odo says it has 210,000 miles on it. Hmmm.

The almost grab of the weekend is a 116,000 mile 617.952. Was just about to pull it and while under the car I noticed oil along the left side of the under belly. Upon closer inspection of the oil pan was crushed and cracked (reason to have a skid plate). Decided to open it up and look at the #2 bearing.... Deep scratches on the bearing surfaces and scratched up journal. Damn! Could of been the 3rd 617.952 I own without a car!

It's probably possible if you make custom adapter blocks or do some major welding.

Oh some work would be needed but the mounting location between 1st and 2nd is the same, the body is the same. It would be possible. Probably the cheapest route to get a real LSD in a W123.

Yes cheaper if you can find a good one. Then if you do find one, the clutches/friction disks most likely need replacing. Now it's going to get expensive.

I think I will go the route of swapping housings at some point. I would like to gain experience of how to set these things.
So getting new clutches/friction disks would be on the list. There are a couple of brake/clutch relining shops here in town, I wonder if they have the capability to re-line these plates. Although different (but concept is still the same), my buddy had some hard to find brake shoes relined locally for 20 bucks. The other thought is using existing transmission friction disks. (07-08-2010, 12:47 PM)winmutt Oh some work would be needed but the mounting location between 1st and 2nd is the same, the body is the same.

Might be too far-fetch though.

Dave, GSXR over on PeachParts has done some LSD clutch replacments on the W124`s. It has to be similar type set up.

Now if there was some way to modify the 126 sub frame to fit the 123.

It almost looks like a locomotive, but it is a bit small for that, my guess is a big as generator. I have a piston from a locomotive and it is about 12" across and 14" tall.

1982 300SD: 304,xxx Super M-pump with 7.5mm elements, 265 Nozzles, GT35 water cooled turbo, M90 Supercharger, A/W Intercooler, Serpentine drive belt, 3" SS exhaust with Magnaflow muffler, 240 breather, AEM dry Filter, Manual Boost Control, EGT / Boost / EMP gauges....Moved on to other projects

1995 F-350 7.3L PSD: 230,xxx 6.0 IC, DIY Stage 1 Injectors, 17* hpop, Tony Wildman Chip, John Wood Trans, 6.4L TC, 3" down pipe, 4" straight exhaust, 310 HP on wheel dyno - 8500# dually: 0-60 in 6.98

Suzuki Samurai: VW 1.9L TD, Trackick doubler transfer case (made by me) 5.8:1 transfer case gears, YJ springs front and rear with rear missing links, wheel base extended 14", diffs welded, some day a VNT.

I cleaned it up and found the part number. Looks like its from a diesel V12 for stationary gas compression.

The smaller piston is from an Isuzu 4BD1T.

(08-03-2010, 04:48 PM)garage Spotted two 190s with 5speeds, going back for a 240d 4speed, a om616 head, a pair of 2nd gen w126 headlights, a pair of euro w116 headlights, a boot for my stick, and a sweet trunk rack of a 80's Subaru i can adapt to my w123.

Gooood day=]

Well today was 50% off day at ecology, so i got up at 6 to grab my goods that i stashed away, and all i ended up with was the euro w116 headlights..the car that the rest of the stuff was stashed in was gone, so i searched the yard looking for it..with no luck.
Sucks.

Damn, That sucks!

ecology has a 50% off day? niiiiice! you go to the one in downey?

Yeah they have a 50% off day a couple times a year i think.

Got myself a new shift knob for the 4speed, one with the gears on it! My old one was all chewed up looking, like somone peeled all the material away.
It makes the interior look alot cleaner, and it is about 2 1/2inches shorter wich means quicker shiftsBig Grin
I also spotted a w126 280SE, with a wonderful looking light blue cloth interior, most of the cloth interiors i find are sunbaked and rip very easily, this was very nice.
Made me wish i had cloth seats.
