so my turbo makes a noise. above a certain engine rpm and load (ie, above a certain turbo rpm?) the turbo noise changes from a smooth high pitched whine into a shrill skreetch. when cruising at a high rpm in 3rd (but not high enough to cause a shift to 4th) I can toggle this noise on and off by pushing and easing up on the accelerator.

I've been going out of my way to try and avoid the conditions that trigger this noise, but the problem is that over the past year, I feel like its getting very slowly easier to trigger the noise. not good.

also, I installed an EGT thermocouple in the exhaust manifold over the christmas break, and while I had the intake apart I check the compressor turbine for side play, and its got some. also not good.

the cost of the rebuild kit is $ I'd rather spend towards a VNT, but realistically that could be 6 months away from happening, so I'm thinking I should probably rebuild the turbo to avoid ruining the entire engine.

can I fix this with a turbo rebuild? or is it already too far gone?

Why rebuild when a good used one is much cheaper? You sure its even the turbo and not a boost or exhaust leak? Look for oil streaks on the intake side and soot streaks on the exhaust side.

ahh, I didn't realize a used one would be cheaper than rebuilding. I guess the problem would be knowing the good used ones from the bad. I guess you'd look at the odometer and check the side-play?

what do you feel is a reasonable price for a good used T3?

$30-100 is the average price, it strongly depends on who/where you buy it from.

All are going to have some oil in the compressor since the CCV system puts a bunch of oil through the intake. Some side-side play is normal, as long as nothing rubs. In-out is what matters, if you can feel it move at all, its worn out.

Where might one find good used turbos in the Denver area? Mine had lots of play so I took it apart and found worn bearings. I have been thinking about doing a rebuild but am not confident it will be in balance because i've read that with a new thrust bearing it still has to be rebalanced. This is how mine looked before disassembly.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91hU5h-cuZc

Ive been to 4 or 5 junkyards and have only seen 2 617's with turbos. I pulled one but it had in-out play. Thinking about checking the other one tomorrow.. any ideas on good yards with more selection?
