Will's 1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-07-2010 bought $500 It's a 1987 300sdl 208k non salvage title wrecked in the front but repairable Its California emissions the paint sucks not a big deal to me the interior is well worn but usable on the plus side it has really nice 16 chrome Benz wheels off a newer s class thanks all RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - ForcedInduction - 06-08-2010 Its worth that for the engine alone. Start it to make sure its good though. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-08-2010 dosen't the cali emissions mean that the turbo exhaust manifold and stuff is diffrent RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - ForcedInduction - 06-08-2010 Only on 84, 85 models. Before and after that date, there is no difference. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-08-2010 The exhaust manifold looks like the 85 cali models it makes a 180 long bend around to the EGR it's really weird I guess they all look like that weird RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - jonbobshinigin - 06-08-2010 How many miles? It is very much worth $600. The OM603 Engine, if running and has no head issues, is worth much more. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-08-2010 How do you know if the is head cracked? Do they smoke more? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-08-2010 looks like I'm going to get it tonight RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - ForcedInduction - 06-08-2010 White smoke, quick pressure build in the cooling system and/or coolant consumption. An accident is usually a sign it was running well enough at least to be drivable. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-08-2010 I got it tonight for $500 I tried to start it but the battery I brought couldn't crank long enough to start it it been sitting for 1 1/2 years! but it had good oil pressure and almost started a few time until the battery just went flat oh well I give it a kick this weekend all that damage and the KIA it hit drove off WTF? It also came with a near perfect set of these rims on it in chrome with only one center cap missing RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - Biohazard - 06-08-2010 Nice find! Whats the plans for the engine? Swap into one of the 240's? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-09-2010 I was planing on fixing it up and driving it if I can find the parts! but if a swap in necessitated it could go into my 1958 219 ponton RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-09-2010 I got it started up tonight runs like a top! I just realize I have a full set of nearly perfect euro w126 lights in my garage! finally something to use them on!!! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - Biohazard - 06-09-2010 Sweet deal! Always nice to hear an engine purring along! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - JB3 - 06-09-2010 the bumper doesn't even look damaged at all. What a great deal! Whats it need now with your lights, a fender, hood, and some inner fender bashing? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-09-2010 The only part on the LH fender that got damaged was the bit below the LH headlamp! I think Ican bend it back just enough! The inner fender and frame are straight as an arrow! What it needs is the rad support on the LH side pulled out about 2-3 inches and a hood/headlamps Then a radiator and fan clutch The only thing's I'm unsure about are the fan it is touching the rad but might be ok? also the fan shroud is unknown looks ok on top? The rad took most of it hit on the steering pump? but it still turns straight! I have a set of euro light's I'm going to put them on there but it looks like the headlight wipers wont work? They fit the other direction so I'll have to keep my eye out for them and the yards + the lower headlight filler's dang should have grabbed them! I got both light's a year ago for $30ish on a 1/2 price day at pull n save with the intention of selling them on eBate I need a cool name for it like Ron Burgundy our last w126 300sd was Vinny or Vin diesel for short! thanks to my sister RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - ForcedInduction - 06-10-2010 (06-09-2010, 11:50 PM)willbhere4u I need a cool name for it like Ron Burgundy our last w126 300sd was Vinny or Vin diesel for short! thanks to my sister Gypsy, Number Two or Snake Plissken for its one eye. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-10-2010 If I was going for a one eyed name it be Leela from Futurama! lol is that the same guy from Captain Ron? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - winmutt - 06-12-2010 Nice buy. That will straighten right out with a little work and a new hood. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-12-2010 So I went to the u pull and pay yard today and got a near perfect set! of euro bumper's off a 1981 380SEL? I also garbed a spare euro headlight and the fillers below the headlight's that don't have the wipers! Here's the weird part it was defiantly a euro car but the bumpers witch are euro bumpers have been modified to fit a us spec cars mounting locations with no absorbers and custom made steel rebar inside the aluminum one? But the car had the euro headlight adjusters and a climate control in french witch I grabbed? and cloth seats? So I noticed that the hod latch is different between the 81 w126 and the 87 w126 the 81 had the latches on either side of the grill and the 87 has them it in the grill like a w123? Can I swap on the older style hood and latch system to get rid of that god awful plastic grill popper thing? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-12-2010 I forgot to mention I got a euro fan fare horn and switch! I spent a little time bending thing's and it 90% better even the hood it also closes and latches now! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-12-2010 This is what I'm hoping it will look like when I'm done! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - Captain America - 06-14-2010 Yeah that one is sexy RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-14-2010 So the euro light's I got have the vacuum adjusters in them so I grabbed the adjuster switch it looks like an easy conversion Eng vacuum to the switch then it has a line that y's to the lights? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 06-26-2010 Alright I've got the fan and fan clutch and a radiator is on the way! Today I removed the old radiator/condenser and fan shroud witch wasn't broken very happy about that I'm trying to make up my mind if I want to replace the rad support or just straight this one! The only part's I need now are a hood grill condenser and its fan and I'm in business! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 07-05-2010 So I got a new fan and rad in this weekend and got it running and driving it runs great it's extremely quiet but I cant feel any boost! I can here the turbo whistling but it doesn't pull like I was expecting at at high revs +3k it smokes a lot! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - winmutt - 07-06-2010 On my 87 300D there is an accordian section on the exhause manifold between cyl 1 and 2. Check for cracks if yours has one. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - jettmar - 07-08-2010 I went nuts trying to figure out why my 603 had no boost and what "fixed it" for me was a total removal of the ALDA. Wow! it woke right up. Apparently this can happen on cars with a lot of miles. It's worth a try. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 07-08-2010 What did you do to remove the ALDA? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - ForcedInduction - 07-10-2010 24mm? and 27mm wrenches. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 07-10-2010 what do you put in its place is more what I meant? I had it running today and checked it for blow by and there was none! I also noticed the all of the rubber fuel hoses are leaking/seeping at an alarming rate! and caused all of my vacuum lines to deteriorate by the ALDA and shut off valve the whole engine bay is covered in a film of diesel fuel RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - ForcedInduction - 07-11-2010 You don't need anything. The shaft has its own seal and it doesn't move. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - jettmar - 07-15-2010 That's right. Take it off and you're done. Apparently, as the engine ages and piles on the miles the IP doesn't allow the ALDA to do it's job and restricts fuel flow on acceleration . On my engine I advanced the pump timing actually to as far as it would go and it still wasn't quite up to spec. I've got a new chain that will be going in! But I did get a slight performance increase with that change, but much more with the ALDA gone. RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 07-15-2010 I'll add a pyro before I mess with that! This weekend I'm going to replace both fuel filters and change all of the fuel lines RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 07-17-2010 Good news : Today I replaced all of the fuel lines on the 300sdl including the small bleeder lines and the feed and return lines and both filters and washed off the engine it looks great now! And I temporarily bypassed the over boost solenoid It wasn't sending boost to the ALDA due to some rotted lines! And found my lost power!!! Bad news : It's delivery valves are leaking on cylinder 4 or 5 arg! but it runs smooth now I just need a rad support and hood and a/c condenser and she will be rip roaring again! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 08-03-2010 Damn starter went out last night suck! I've got an eBay rebuild from Cali for $100 on the way RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - Biohazard - 08-04-2010 Can't wait for this beauty to be on the road!! Any new pictures yet of repairs/progress? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 08-06-2010 Well I got the new starter in and shes running like a champ I also got a rad support! Now all I need a hood and ac condenser and AC cooling can and some more time but I drove it to work today doing 80mph and was fast quiet and smooth I'm loving it's power! But as the trans shifts under partial load it clunks like a mount or something? And the shifter has a weird vibration some times? I'm guessing the Guibo Coupler on the drive shaft and a trans mount? Bio I'll take some pics tonight but it still not pretty! once I have all of the parts I'm going to tear in to it some more but it is legally drivable minus 1 headlight for now! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - Captain America - 08-06-2010 AC cooling can huh? RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 08-06-2010 Yea doesn't your car have an AC cooling can? I guess I could just use an AC cooling fan instead RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - Captain America - 08-06-2010 Na, I took mine out when I did the stage 1 weight reduction! RE: should I buy this1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 10-17-2010 Progress I got a pre 85 hood and grill no more stupid hood release through the grill it has the cooler double style hood released on the hood latches! on either side of the grill!!! I am 90% done welding the new rad support in a few more welds and a little time aligning and adjusting the hood and LH fender and then the best part euro bumpers front and rear already modified for standard U.S. mounts and euro headlights and wiper delete front filler panels go on!!!! hopeful it will all fit and line up!!! I may try modifying the old headlight wipers to work with the euro lights by switching LH and RH around!?! I'll take some more pics soon! I think my glow plug light on the dash died? I still have to wait for a couple of second to start it easily RE: Will's 1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 10-19-2010 The Good: Update I finished the rad support I also installed the new front bumper and one headlight temporary and took some pics! next I have to seam seal and paint the rad support and I still need an AC condenser ! my hood alignment still needs a little messing around with I'm not completely done yet I need to move the hood over towards the passenger side Yea the paint on the hood sucks but it almost matches in color The Bad: I found an ugly JB weld patch on the bottom of the oil pan that's seaping oil slowly suck! Does any one know if you swap oil pans in the car on a w126 300sdl om603??? RE: Will's 1987 300sdl - George3soccer - 10-20-2010 Great find, there bud. RE: Will's 1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 10-20-2010 So far I'm still under the $1,000 mark on this car and all of the parts. I still have to hook up all of the vacuum to the euro lights for adjusting them! But it looks simple enough I also have a fan fare horn to install and the euro rear bumper RE: Will's 1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 10-20-2010 I wired up the euro lights today and got the RH side working but I am missing the LH headlight bulb and the LH blinker isn't working correctly with the headlights on??? I'll have to mess with it tomorrow after I pick up a headlight bulb RE: Will's 1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 10-23-2010 Update got all of the rad support seam sealed and painted. I also figured out my turn signal gremlin I forgot to hook up the main body ground to the radiator support! Here are some more pics! I'm going to fill it up with coolant and trans fluid tomorrow and hopefully it should be good to go! I know the color dose not match but it's close enough until I repaint the car! RE: Will's 1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 10-23-2010 There you are one Mercedes made out of pick and pull goodies! RE: Will's 1987 300sdl - mb-rene - 10-24-2010 nice job ! RE: Will's 1987 300sdl - willbhere4u - 10-24-2010 (10-24-2010, 01:46 AM)mb-rene nice job ! Thanks I wish it was half as nice as your car! Update today I got it up and running and drove it to Estes park from Plattville and back ran great or at least the audi s4 behind me never did catch me on the way up! The only thing I noticed driving back the euro lights on low beam only shine like 6ft in front of the car I need to figure out how to adjust them or hook up the vacuum adjusters or something! |
