stan's 240D - stan - 02-21-2011 A new journey begins! this will be my 240D which lives an easy life, because I am now the proud owner of an '07 VW GTI. no more daily driving a diesel benz means i can have fun with the 240D project and not stress about keeping things on the road instead of doing proper and detailed work. I picked up an OM616, and will be picking up my rolling chassis from garage (as in garage the std member) as soon as some things down here get sorted out, within the next week. I've started pulling the engine bits off to clean and paint them, and it is really apparent that someone cared about this engine. the starter was recently replaced and is a bosch unit. the glow plugs are perfect, and underneath the valve cover it looks like a new engine. RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-22-2011 some painted bits in progress: so clean! RE: stan's 240D - Captain America - 02-22-2011 Looks good on my phone! Lol Ps. My 300SD will tear your GTgay a new arsehole RE: stan's 240D - JB3 - 02-22-2011 a new rolling chassis, or the wagon? since you have those springs, you should make a 240TD if you still have the wagon RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-22-2011 (02-22-2011, 07:36 AM)dropnosky a new rolling chassis, or the wagon? since you have those springs, you should make a 240TD if you still have the wagon Wagon getting towed off by buyer today, it had toooo many issues to be worth putting more money time and engines into I have had those sls delete springs for sale for sooooo long and not even one person has been interested.... (02-22-2011, 03:04 AM)Captain America Looks good on my phone! Lol I'd be surprised. Isn't that a 617 powered car? RE: stan's 240D - Captain America - 02-22-2011 Yup, TURBO baby! haha but I was just messin with yeah buddy RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-22-2011 more pretty pretty engine parts. i sat down and polished the hell out of the original oil cap. started out old and nasty like all of them. process went simple green -> dremel with wire brush -> 100 grit -> 220 grit -> 400 grit -> 800 grit -> 1000 grit -> 1000 grit wet. I think it was a success. thinking i will fill the stamped emblem and OEL lettering with gloss black. RE: stan's 240D - Captain America - 02-22-2011 Thats gonna look fuckin awesome! I really love that blue! RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-22-2011 (02-22-2011, 03:48 PM)Captain America Thats gonna look fuckin awesome! I really love that blue! yeeee im gonna paint a buncha stuff that blue, debating on the 2nd color though. i want leaks to show up real easy so this thing doesnt sneak out out on me like that bastard 300TD did. i gotta figure out what to do with the block though, i cant really see tryign to mask off everything in order to paint the block, so i want to find something brushable that is temp/chem resistant....any ideas? RE: stan's 240D - 300D50 - 02-22-2011 Dare I ask, but is that FORD blue? Oil cap looks sweet, needs gloss black in the letters like you said, some mag polish, and with a shot or 30 of clearcoat. RE: stan's 240D - yankneck696 - 02-22-2011 Rustoleum & Ace Hardware have brushable hi temp paint. Personally, while the engine is out, I'd just mask off the electrical & plumbing connections & rattle can the hell out of it. Masking goes prety quick & if it's on a stand, it can be rotated to get everything. Ed RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-22-2011 RE: stan's 240D - Captain America - 02-22-2011 Wait, you ran the TD out of oil!?! (02-22-2011, 06:17 PM)300D50 with a shot or 30 of clearcoat. Yes! Clear the shite out of it so it looks that good forever I wouldn't paint the block anything but clear or black, it will get dirty no matter what and will never look good again... RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-22-2011 (02-22-2011, 11:46 PM)Captain America Wait, you ran the TD out of oil!?! no, didnt run it outta oil. in fact it still is good on oil even after it seized. im not sure what could go wrong to suddenly get 0 oil pressure and not be out of oil but thats what happened. RE: stan's 240D - 300D50 - 02-23-2011 Sounds like the oil pump had a hissy... RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-23-2011 still need to finish cleaning up the edges on the mercedes emblem, but then its getting clear coat and BOOM, pimptastic valve cover. RE: stan's 240D - Captain America - 02-23-2011 Did you just say pimptastic? Dude you and me and garage are as white as they come, we are already the minority around here, common! RE: stan's 240D - dieselboy - 02-23-2011 You want another 616? I bought garages other 240d and I'm pulling the engine infavor of some more powa. RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-23-2011 (02-23-2011, 02:30 AM)dieselboy You want another 616? I bought garages other 240d and I'm pulling the engine infavor of some more powa. i can't store a whole engine, but i need a handful of parts. pm sent. RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-25-2011 heading out to pick up the rolling chassis from garage's house today! RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-26-2011 holy shit that was a long day. 8:00am- up, getting ready to go 10:00 - pick up friend with truck 11:00 - get to uhaul, dick around, find out the truck wont work 12:00 - regroup 2:00 - find friend who will loan his durango 3:00 - on the road 3:40 - trailer rented, attached, en route to car 3:40-5:45 - sitting in shit ass traffic, garage has to leave to pick up his new W116 6:00 - get to garage's house, go get food. 6:00 - 10:30 - sit in front of garage's house in the car, chilling, waiting for him to get back 11:00 - loading up 240d 11:30 - 1:30 - almost dying on teh way home in the rain it was DUMPING rain, and on teh crappy freeways in the inland empire you cant hardly see the lanes. rain was so heavy that i had to slow down to 25-30mph because of the poor visibility. kept getting passed by crazy ass semi trucks doing like 60mph past me. one came into my lane and i had to go into the shoulder to not get demolished. made it home finally, was a harrowing experience. the 240D is SUPER SUPER SUPER CLEAN. garage is the best. going to wake up early in the morning to unload from the trailer, and return the trailer/car. tl;dr - long ass day, lots of shit going awry, crazy weather and towing too much weight was scary, home now with the goodies. RE: stan's 240D - garage - 02-26-2011 Fuckkiinn rain. Glad you got home safe and all. Itll be worth it once your putting around town with 62hp under the hood and a 4speed in your hand RE: stan's 240D - 300D50 - 02-26-2011 Uhaul won't rent to owners of certain makes of vehicle due to pissy in-fighting... RE: stan's 240D - garage - 02-26-2011 (02-26-2011, 02:57 PM)300D50 Uhaul won't rent to owners of certain makes of vehicle due to pissy in-fighting... Pissy what??? On there website they dont even list mercedes as a vehicle they allowed to be towed. RE: stan's 240D - 300D50 - 02-26-2011 If you have a Ford, they will try their best to not rent you even a tow dolly, lawsuits or some crap. I beleive their contract bans an explorer from ever towing anything they can rent as well. One of my friends ran into this one, he just said he would be towing with his gmc, but had to pick it up that day with the ford... :p Back on topic, when will we see pictures!? RE: stan's 240D - garage - 02-26-2011 (02-26-2011, 03:19 PM)300D50 If you have a Ford, they will try their best to not rent you even a tow dolly, lawsuits or some crap. Man uhaul is wack. I belive stan told them he was towing a CRX...HA HA HA RE: stan's 240D - dieselboy - 02-26-2011 Dang I got lucky when I got my car from him lol. Left here at 8 there at 10 after breakfast and loaded the car up and was gone in 30min. Got back home at 12 for some lunch. RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-26-2011 oh man fuck HOAs. got a letter today about a hearing regarding working on my car "in the community" and "damaging the pavement". RE: stan's 240D - garage - 02-26-2011 What the hell.. Thats some messed up stuff, i remember you mentioning once about not being able to work on your car at your house.. Does that mean the 240 project is screwed? RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-26-2011 (02-26-2011, 05:52 PM)garage What the hell.. no, but my mom is pissed because she has to show up at a "hearing". she said after the 240d no more old cars fucking HOA. i wasn't even working on my car. im pretty sure its because one day when the lady a couple houses down (who is a board member, and hates me) was having her carpets cleaned so she was home during the day (10am or so) and i had to jump start the wagon. and they are trying to pin the oil spots in the parking in front of my house on me....except anyone can park there and there are spots in every parking place. pics impending, i just have to wait for my droid to charge up. car is all washed, now waiting till someone comes over to help me push it into the garage. RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-26-2011 RE: stan's 240D - 300D50 - 02-27-2011 Just another excuse to dumb down the population till they can't fart without help... Looks like a nice clean one! Is the antenna dead? RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-27-2011 (02-27-2011, 12:31 AM)300D50 Looks like a nice clean one! its SO clean. i really really lucked out, garage really hooked me up on this. there's a golf-ball diameter / 0.5" deep dent in the top part of one fender, and some nicks to metal in a couple spots, but i am pretty sure i can touch them up with some paintscratch.com paint and be 100% good. i need to get the proper pads for my power buffer because i think this paint could look factory-new with a little work. RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-28-2011 holy shit dude. went to paint supply depo and picked up 3m finesse-it, velcro wheel for the buffer that's been sitting in my garage forever, and a wool pad thing. the damn paint looks absolutely fucking NEW. the dude who owns the paint place was right. its nuts, it seriously looks like the car got repainted yesterday. pics coming when i find my droid. RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-28-2011 not done yet but check this out - guess which side has been done lol RE: stan's 240D - Jtn190D - 02-28-2011 Wow thats amazing. How long did it take? RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-28-2011 (02-28-2011, 06:54 PM)Jtn190D Wow thats amazing. How long did it take? it's not a quick process. i didnt measure time but i think i spent a good 2-3 hours doing half the hood, one front fender, the doors, half the roof, and part of the trunk lid. i still have a lot left to do, and i'm sure ill end up finding spots i missed and need to go back and do. RE: stan's 240D - yankneck696 - 02-28-2011 That's why it's called Finesse. You should try Perfect It next.... I took care of (I think) the largest collection of GM musclecars. Look up Musclecar City in Punta Gorda, FL. When a car came back from paint, it was 8-12 hours of Finesse it... Then 4-6 hours of Perfect it. That was with a DA & foam waffle pads of different grades. Ed RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-28-2011 yankneck696 - yeah, definitely going to give perfect it a try after i finishing with this. using a green wool pad at the moment and it seems to be working great. more eye candy: keep in mind, these pics are all without wax. i am fully expecting it to look even better after i do the final buffing with perfect-it and put a good coat of wax on. RE: stan's 240D - yankneck696 - 02-28-2011 Shweet !!!! Give it a nice paste. Fleetwax is my preference. Ed RE: stan's 240D - garage - 02-28-2011 DAMN! Im jealous.... RE: stan's 240D - stan - 02-28-2011 (02-28-2011, 09:33 PM)garage DAMN! Im jealous.... come down to OC i'll show you how to buff that 116 of yours car update: i'm figuring out some accessory stuff. busdepot has 7" H4s for $45 a pair. probably going to get those, along with some REAL bright lights. don't want to spend the money on euros, and i think i'm going to not mount the hellas. i'm starting to wnat to keep this more just a really clean stock 240D - as opposed to a dirty rally rat rod like my wagon was debating on what else to do with the thing to make it nice. remember, i have till march 31 and then the car has to be out of the garage and done. color sanding is something i'm thinking about, but i gotta figure out if its thick enough to do that safely. the dash has cracks, but i dont want to go pay $300 for a crack-free one. probably just going to try and make a point of dropping by the JY more often in hopes of finding a good dash. i have a friend who has scored 2 amazing ones from ecology in the last year or so. as far as tires i'm trying to decide between getting a modern tread 195/70R14 or maybe getting something like a 185 hancook like busdepot sells for buses/vanagons here i'm thinking to strip the aluminum wheels and paint them, really dont feel like tracking down a clean set of hubs and i don't ant to slap bundts on it either. i think the steelie look could be pulled off if i do it right.... (02-28-2011, 09:20 PM)yankneck696 Shweet !!!! Give it a nice paste. Fleetwax is my preference. what do you think about nu-finish? i just clayed my GTI yesterday and that's what i put on it afterwards (by hand). im not a wax connoisseur but it seemed pretty good to me. RE: stan's 240D - yankneck696 - 03-01-2011 My former employer would have shot me if I even brought Nu Finish into the shop. Personally, I have never tried it. The Fleetwax is an industrial/marine wax & lasts real good in the harsh Floriduh environment. Ed RE: stan's 240D - stan - 03-02-2011 pulled apart the headlights. polished the headlight doors, polished the chrome bezels, and pulled the old sealed beams out. looks like i'm going to get those 7" bosch H4s that busdepot has on sale, and get some 5 3/4" H1 or H3 high beams to put in place of the fogs. not sure what bulb wattage to rock on the 7" - 90/100w would be cool but i dunno if it will look TOOOO bright. i don't mind wiring up relays to do it, but i don't want to end up with the 'ricer look' either.... the goal i'm working towards at this point is to have a really clean 'restored' 240D. any upgrades from stock will just be for safety / comfort. that means brakes, lights, suspension, tires. easier to justify if everything has a really direct relation to safe operation of the car i'm really hoping everything comes out as i'm picturing - if all goes well i could feel comfortable bringing this thing to cars and coffee (big car meet in irvine) worked on cleaning out hte engine compartment, and praise fsm, the paint is all still totally fine except a couple small nicks. this thing is so clean its unbelievable. hitting up ecology tomorrow for some parts. going to try and find a good set of W126 calipers so i can run them on the 240 (and probably just buy new rotors). if i get lucky maybe there will be a crack-free black dash to be had no pics right now, will update tomorrow. RE: stan's 240D - garage - 03-02-2011 I would go for the bright lights! I dont think itll look ricer, it will definetly stay classic, just with a modern touch. How often is the cars and coffee meet? Once a month or somthin? Ive read about it before and wanted to take the blue 240d there when i had it. We should get a Benz gathering goin on!! RE: stan's 240D - stan - 03-02-2011 busted the shit outta my leg but i'm home now. got late W126 front calipers (abs capable if i choose to later), and a bunch of bosch 30A relays with pigtails. these will let me make new harnesses for the headlight upgrades (and whatever else) but still have oem fit and stick them in the stock relay panel! going to read up on rebuilding these calipers. planning on getting new rotors and pads for them as well. should be SWEET. RE: stan's 240D - stan - 03-02-2011 heard back from busdepot, they have some tires that are intended for vw buses, but look kinda cool to put on my car.... 185/82R14. so the slight increase in tread circumfrence would give me something like a 5% error at freeway speed (i.e. going ~63 when speedo says 60). not sure if this small of an error would be good or bad (or not perceptible?)- decreased accel but lower rpms at cruise. http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=RA08 RE: stan's 240D - Captain America - 03-02-2011 Please dont get tires that are too skinny for the wheel .... Everyone does that and it looks soooooooooo dumb! RE: stan's 240D - stan - 03-02-2011 (03-02-2011, 10:41 PM)Captain America Please dont get tires that are too skinny for the wheel .... Everyone does that and it looks soooooooooo dumb! they're exactly the right size. little taller, little narrower. they are intended for exactly the wheels that i have. RE: stan's 240D - Captain America - 03-03-2011 Are those the factory size? I'm pretty sure the factory size is right for the wheels |
