I wish i would have snapped a picture of the 3" rear axle that we snapped in one of our tractors. It would have fit perfect here

RE: Fail thread - dieselboy - 10-06-2011

I have a axle at home from a cat 777. Now that's impressive. Chromolly 3" solid 7' ish sheared at the splines.

RO w123 300D + European Road Trip in October = Epic fail.

Got a broken headlamp and windshield in the service... but that's fixable. Also got some paperwork problems.....

Front wheel bearing repair on 1987 quantum.

Brakes and axle must be disconnected, lower ball joint must be disconnected, tie rod must be disconnected, lower control arm must be swung down and out of the way, entire strut and spring assembly must be removed, outer wheel hub must be pulled out with a slide hammer, dust shield must be completely removed, and bearing must be pressed out of the hub on a bench after removing a pair of snap rings.

All said and done, what should be a super simple repair like most other cars requires you to damn near disassemble the entire brake and suspension system on that side, just so you can do the job on a bench press.

You can see the Audi overcomplexity influence on the fairly simple 80s VW products since a quantum is essentially a rebadged Audi 4000.

I bought a bearing, but now im replacing shocks, brakes, a tie rod, and sway bar links. What a pain in the ass.

Crap, I hope I don't have to do that with my VW B5.5 Passat if I ever need a new bearing.

When I repaired the CV boots on my Passat, I found out that the CV joint and outer hub holds the wheel bearing together. This requires 140 ft lbs of torque plus a 90° turn using a 4 feet long cheater bar. Damn did it feel like I was going to sheer off the bolt. Is that same procedure for the audi?

That sounds like a little bit more complex but more realisitic version of the same setup on this quantum. The outer hub and CV joint sandwich the wheel bearing, but its a sealed unit press fit into the knuckle, and then located with a pair of large snap rings.

It was pretty easy to expose the bearing, I just used a slide hammer to get the outer hub out after undoing the axle nut, but to actually remove the bearing itself, the whole knuckle/suspension has to come down. Since I left the first post, ive been torching the tie rod, which is not coming out of its seat in the knuckle

Sounds like the later passat is set up better where the bearing will come out on the car without too much additional disassembly?

RE: Fail thread - majesty78 - 10-15-2011

There are special tools to remove the bearings without heving to dismount the whole knuckle ;-)

Tech-wise I still have to change the oils (engine, gearbox, diff), and it's running great.

Paperwork seems to be properly addressed in a few days... so you guys might get to see some Pics from Stuttgart!

Yeah, I figure some kind of mobile press that is VW specific. I tried using my mobile truck kingpin press, but its too big. Interestingly the shop manual I have calls for the complete removal of the assembly, evidently they wrote down the hard way.

How much paperwork do you have to do? do you have to preemptively clear paperwork and forms for each country you intend to go through? or can you just show up at the border and pass after some work right there?

Im used to Canada, a few questions and your drivers license and you are in. Way harder to get back in the US though, but thats done as you arrive also

EDIT- ill ask these questions on the threads in question so as not to divert the fail thread too much. sorry

120,000 original correct miles. 4.5 Litre V-8 New fuel pump, tank flush. Starts runs smooth. clear title in hand. This auto is being sold as is no guarantee even though its fairly pristine. I am doing this as a favor for an acquaintance, so i have limmited info. The price is 1/2 what it is easily worth, so it is firm. Interior is perfect. the low price is strictly because we need to sell fast in a soft market!! This is a 7500 car easily per the Mercedes dealer!!
Thank you
