RE: The 300D50 - garage - 04-08-2011

So i assume this means your adding a turbo too right?

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 04-08-2011

Yep, that's why I decided to get the cam as well. Smile

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 04-10-2011

Woot! Two boxes of parts came!
Still waiting on the pistons/rods, and the multitude of bolts.
For some reason only the post office knows, that box is still in transit.
The crank and cam will come latter on once the best mode of transit is found.

So far it looks like I'll be able to work with the turbo oil pump much easier, since it doesn't hang down quite as low in the front, and the pickup is on the back side instead of the bottom.

There's a minimal amount of work that needs to be done to fit it to the NA block, mainly switching out the #1 main bearing retainer, removing the NA pump's drive shaft, and clearancing the front of the block for the chain.

I could do it with the grinder and a steady hand, but I think it will be more interesting to fixture it standing upright in the bridgeport. Big Grin

I'll also need to modify my upper pan's front seal retainer to clear the pump chain and hold the front main seal in it's new location. I made it modular for a reason. Wink

You 616 turbo guys would be able to swap one in as well, but you'll need to find a way to get the second sprocket on the crank. Should be able to have the keyway cut and just move the main seal out. You would need some modification to the harmonic balencer as well.

The oil squirters each need 4 holes drilled, 2 of them reamed, and one of them tapped, in addition to facing off the casting. I'll need to pop the head off to do that properly, so it may wait for a bit.
If the 616 has the needed oil gallery, then they could be added easily.

I still have to get off my @ss and make the templates for the motor mount brackets... cardboard and markers seem so crude when I've been using a CMM and 3D models for so long...

I'm thinking I'll do that today.

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 04-11-2011

Motor mount templates.

Ended up just using my knife, no markers, no scissors, no tape measures... I felt like Ogg, the brutal caveman, slashing and cutting to make it work.
Nice to know I can still "get it done" without my comfy assortment of toys, tools, and software.

It'll use stock mitsubishi rubber and stock Mercedes engine side mounts, easiest way to do it.

Going to bend them out of a single sheet to cut down on the welding involved, and make em a bit more rigid.

The final template will be finished in CAD, just so I can easily print out two copies and tweak the angles to ones that make sense.
I also want to throw it in the FEA package and see how it responds to load.

I don't trust that inner-caveman much...

Id say you're still doing ok if you are using cardboard to make a model. Full on caveman would have been to sketch it out with a cigarette butt or blood on some 1/4 inch steel, cut it out with a torch over flammable objects shirtless, then weld that sucker in regardless of accuracy while drunk, high, or both.

Day two would be fix all yesterdays mistakes and make similar sweeping guesses

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 05-08-2011

You forgot shorts and sandals while welding haha

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 06-21-2011

Heh, the motor mounts have been redesigned...

The inner caveman was not to be trusted after all.

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 06-21-2011

He can get insurance!

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 06-21-2011

The caveman insurance would be $100 more for me actually...

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 06-21-2011

Yeah no one can beat my AAA and 77 years as a member Cool

RE: The 300D50 - led-panzer - 06-21-2011

Lol The only thing I can get is liability through my insurance because the car is "so old"

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 06-22-2011

77 years??!??!?!?!? I smell a typo...
A few chunks of posts from my main build thread on HRCS, showing the oil pump backing plate build saga...

”300D50” Oh, and here's some oil pump guts!

”300D50” Getting there!

Still have to mill the outer contour, and make the mating adapter for the aluminum tubing that will be running to the pickup in the back of the sump.

”300D50” New custom rear half of the oil pump.

Front half of pump, including pump gears.

Clean with a paper towel and water, dry, then apply a thin-ish bead of Permatex 51813 gasket maker. The manual doesn't specify to do this, but I prefer not to tempt fate.

And done.

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 06-22-2011

Ok, typo. 75-76 years... The card is old.

Oil pump looks badass!

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 06-23-2011

I'm confused... did you fake your DOB on the forum? it's showing 1/3 that...

Wow, that's confusing, but now I get it.

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 06-23-2011

I'm trading in the KKK for a Toyota CT-26 off a supra.

What the hell I'm doing, I do not know.

Please let me know if I'm insane...

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 06-24-2011

LOL!!!

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 06-24-2011

Was that a "yes" "no" or "maybe you should get your head checked"?

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 06-24-2011

That was a "I know exactly how you feel!"

A far as the turbo goes... I am no expert and it seems there are two different compressors, but when I looked at the first one that popped up, it looks Nice!

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 06-24-2011

It should be good for ~ 250HP if the required AR isn't off the map.

Running those calculations right now...
It'd be right at the edge of efficiency at 250HP given worst case scenario.

Oh, and I already bought it, so there's no turning back now... except for within 30 days that is.

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 06-29-2011

Just bought an M90 off a Buick Ultra... I think I'm jumping off the deep end...

Now to trade for the ford non-molested M90 that my friend has...

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 06-30-2011

Oh baby!

My dad helped me by welding in the new passenger side motor mount, still needs to get the back side of the front gusset welded, and the underside on the outside of the frame.

RE: The 300D50 - mike-81-240d - 07-21-2011

Twin charging? I like where this is going.

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 07-21-2011

If its anything like Rudolf's... it will be insane!

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 07-22-2011

Heh, I'm just flowing with it. Gonna get me a 10mm pump first...

RE: The 300D50 - dieselsmoke300d - 05-23-2012

Well after you get done with supercharging your Tiburon, you should get back to this. And wow this thread's been sitting here for a while.

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 05-24-2012

Is that what hes been up to?

RE: The 300D50 - JB3 - 05-24-2012

(05-24-2012, 02:06 AM)Captain America Is that what hes been up to?

yeah, i was wondering what happened to him. Tiburon! bah! Big Grin

RE: The 300D50 - dieselsmoke300d - 05-25-2012

I'll let him tell you the whole Tibby story if he so chooses. But that engine project is looking good so far.

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 07-10-2012

Diesel swap is candled.

I am tired of living dreams that are not mine.

RE: The 300D50 - dieselsmoke300d - 07-10-2012

'Tis unfortunate... I would've helped.

RE: The 300D50 - Captain America - 07-10-2012

Living dreams that are not yours?

RE: The 300D50 - JB3 - 07-10-2012

(07-10-2012, 01:04 AM)300D50 Diesel swap is candled.

I am tired of living dreams that are not mine.

WTF?

are you serious? after all the custom stuff you've machined out of aluminum to make it work?

gotta put that engine in something!
What happened?

RE: The 300D50 - led-panzer - 07-10-2012

I agree, what happened? So many custom parts and of such quality, it would be a shame to see it remain unfinished. But hell, we don't know. I hope everything is ok.... you kinda fell off the grid man

RE: The 300D50 - 300D50 - 08-12-2012

I just got burnt out working on the same thing for over 5 years with nothing to show for it.
My brother needs a vehicle, so we're stuffing another V6 back into the red truck since that's all it's ever needed.
Waiting on an ECU/immobilizer/key set, and it'll be on the road in time for fall/winter.

The swap project is being taken over by a friend, using an I4 recipient truck, so not all is lost.
