Did you use the drive chain from the 606 or the 320cdi? Are they the same length?

Use the 606 chain, they are the same.

Ditto same chain. Also I never found an onboard dipstick for my 648 pan. I'll just use the red plastic plug when operating and carry the measuring stick behind the seat. It just shows the correct level when it's inserted into the pan tube until it hits bottom. Must be a universal one. Can't figure out MBs' logic here. I got tired of searching and Pelican parts informed me of this silly system. If there is an onboard or full time dipstick available for the om648 pan that I'm not aware of, would love to have the part #.

I bought the whole donor engine, which came with dipstick and tube, I'll have a look for a part number next time I'm in the workshop.

There is no dipstick for the OM 648 in the USA. The dealer has a gismo to check the oil level. The electronic sensor in the pan tells you if the oil level is to low. I agree it is a crazy system, but they must have some reason for it. It is like the OM 606 has no oil pressure sender in the block.

I guess we'll just have to carry the measuring stick like I said. What numbers do you use on it for the OM606, Zeeman?

There is a guy on E-bay that sells a calibrated measuring dip stick for the 648 in MM. I think it was $25.00. it is used on different engines but he gives the measurement for each engine. I believe the OM 648 was 133 MM. to 135mm. from the bottom of the pan. But I need to double check that.

That's the stick I got. The OM648 holds 8 quarts. The 98 606.962 calls for 7.5 quarts and the 99 606.962 calls for 8 or vice versa. We should be able to put 7.75 quarts in a dry 606 engine, start it, run for 30 seconds, shut off and then check with this tool-(https://automotivetools.com/products/669/technic-tool/m120-0721/mercedes-tool-dipstick-oil) inserted to bottom of sump and use the number you get as full reference. We still have to remove it and store it during operation. Ah. those wonderful Germans.

I'm looking to fit a rear sump on my OM605 (for BMW E36 application), are these the correct part numbers?

Sump
6470140302

Oil pump
6471800201

Additionally, I've come across the part number A6121810201, which seems to be another 5 cylinder rear sump oil pump. Does anyone know if this will work?

You could try OM662 Ssanyong Musso sump and pickup. I'll have one of these (rear bowl) in a few months as I need front G specific sump & pickup for the application.

What conclusions did we come to in regards to the baffle plates on the 606 -> 648 oil sump conversion?

I'm doing mine now and I was thinking of modifying the original one to fit in the back of the engine.
