RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-05-2013 Putting on the brembo slotted found out that they were the wider variety that didnt fit the calipers I had on there. Luckily I had a spare set that did fit, red paint is drying now. Ran the battery down 2x now cranking with Dieselmeken's super pump in. Waiting time. RE: My 1987 300D - dieselmeken - 07-05-2013 (07-05-2013, 01:36 PM)winmutt Putting on the brembo slotted found out that they were the wider variety that didnt fit the calipers I had on there. Luckily I had a spare set that did fit, red paint is drying now. Is pump jammed?? Should be fuel up on injectors after 1 min cranking! Take cover away and check rack for smooth movement and all 6 forks in place RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-05-2013 I always have problems getting the air purged out of the system, mostly because my battery has needed replacement for years I will check if its jammed. Sadly the brembos were too wide for my calipers but I had another set from C class that was the right size but wrong offset.... RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-06-2013 Bought a nice new Bosch battery last night and got the air purged out. Unfortunately I must have removed the IP lock tool too early and the IP was off more than I could adjust for. I have pulled it this morning and retimed it. Have to go work on my rental property in the rain (yay fun not) this afternoone but will be back on it this evening. Also been rethinking a few of the 90 degree angle joints in the intercooler tubing and may fix that as well. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-06-2013 GRRRR mistimed again. Whatever I am doing, I am doing it wrong. Atleast this time I could see the tang on the IP at the far end of the adjustment and the car started but ran like crap. Le Sigh. The problem clearly occurs when I tighten the left hand screw and I can feel the timing device adjusting. First time I did this I had already pulled the locking pin put. Last time I left the locking pin in and it seemed like a bad idea since I could break the tang off. The manual is all but shit worthless as its install instructions are put locking pin in and then install everything else.... And here I am comparing 2 FSM's one for 602 and one for 603. The 602 (recent startek download) says to remove the basket to make it easier to turn the engine and the 603 one says *TO* mount it. Here we go again.... RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-07-2013 Whew, third time is the charm. It is a bit smokey as you said Dieselmeken. I still have a lot of things to finish up on so I will take a look at that later. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-07-2013 Everything is mounted and the around the corner test drive is complete. Shit absolute shit. That is my traction in the wet. I can't get any traction till third gear. Smoke was gone when I came back from test drive. I will go out later tonight and get some fuel and see what the smoke is like. Yes my work space is in bad need of a serious cleaning..... RE: My 1987 300D - maxypriest - 07-07-2013 I'm loving this project! More vids please!!! RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-07-2013 (07-07-2013, 04:11 PM)maxypriest I'm loving this project! More vids please!!! Thanks. I am but a peon compared to some of the others here but this is a long dream realized. I went for a test run and its peppier. Not as balls to the walls as with my last engine but things are turned down considerably for some break in. This is by far one of the best test runs I've ever had, usually there is *something* that needs immediate remediation. No rattles! with all that piping. I know it might not look pretty but NO RATTLES! I hate rattles and squeeks. Honestly, whatever I turn the ALDA up to it wont be much more, for a daily driver it's got quite a nice pickup. I am clearly leaking in the intercooler piping but with no boost gauge hooked up I can't tell how much. Still need to get a bango bolt for the 91 style boost sensor which is sitting on my desk ready to get to work. In third at 85mph I got over 1275 F. With the Alda turned down/turbo leak I am not getting that much more power in 4th and 5th, honestly this is not a bad thing it will keep the hoon in me calm. The idle smoke is gone once the engine is warm. We will see in the morning if it comes back. Thanks to dieselmeken for the pump and most of all thanks to everyone for their help over the years. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-07-2013 ps if anyone sees the guy that sells those chin spoilers, please let me know! Cant really justify the cost of a full on kit or ever front spoiler. RE: My 1987 300D - lgreeley83 - 07-07-2013 Ahh its like that moment in bed after... The cool calm. Sleep tight and drive again tomorrow. Maybe have a contest with yourself to see how long you can go without working on the car. I rarely last more than 2 days. RE: My 1987 300D - Bangaway - 07-07-2013 If you got it, flaunt it. Ha ha. Nice work. Good motivation. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-16-2013 Silberfeil. Needs some touch up but it was a steal. RE: My 1987 300D - MFSuper90 - 07-16-2013 A small boost leak can cause a lot of power loss, so only good things to come once its fixed! Cool project winmutt RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-18-2013 God this car is so fun to drive. Thanks again Dieselmeken! What is the rev limiter set to? I almost hit 60 in second gear last night before I chickened out . No Tach so I have no clue what I was turning. If anyone remembers the Mazda commercial where the guy drives off the traffic road onto a fantastic mountain with s curves and switch backs, I wish every day was like this for me! RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-21-2013 Poop. Blown GP relay this am. On the bright side, the GP case is perfectly sized for an arduino. RE: My 1987 300D - mantahead - 07-22-2013 come on Winmutt, we need videos!!!!! Your about 3x faster than me! I don't even have time to change a headgasket, put my hx30 on, and your old A/W intercooler. Let alone all the stuff you have done RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-22-2013 The fact that it has rained EVERY FRICKING DAY has not helped out at all. I dont have any wet traction. This weekend it was nice and I was going to the JY and stupid GP relay went out. Its starting to get a bit cooler in the evening sometimes right now. I am dying to get up in the mountains, there is a 2 hr drive to some pretty decent roads: http://www.motorcycleroads.com/75/173/Georgia/Georgias-Dragon---The-Suches-Loop.html And the tail of the dragon is not much further away: RE: My 1987 300D - Simpler=Better - 07-22-2013 (07-22-2013, 01:14 PM)winmutt The fact that it has rained EVERY FRICKING DAY has not helped out at all. I am dying to get up in the mountains, there is a 2 hr drive to some pretty decent roads: A guy I know recently dumped his bike up there. Wound up with 3 screws and a plate in his ankle RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-26-2013 Not an exact fit. Had to remove the contact plate on the steering wheel and still managed to blow a fuse. However a quick pic from the drive in to work.... : Totally surprised at how it "feels". I had a C class on before which was a little smaller similar to this one : This silberpfeil has deeper contours for the fingers from 2-4 and 8-10. I found the silberpfeil insert when I got home today (not sure why it was removed). Scratched it a bit getting it back in RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-26-2013 Been having a real hard time finding 245/55/16 tires. However there is a plethora of good used takeoffs fro 17 and 18" tires...... Tomorrow I will pick these up: Shouldn't look too bad: RE: My 1987 300D - willbhere4u - 07-26-2013 It will look nice RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-27-2013 The ones shown on the car above ended up being 17". These are a nogo. 275 in the rear pokes out to far rubs on vertical travel (like every dip) and 245 in the front rubs on when turning. I found some monoblock reps that have 235 all the way around, those seem like a much better solution here. More to come. RE: My 1987 300D - mantahead - 07-27-2013 sure are wide, nice wheel. stretch tyre maybe? (although some people dont like it) RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 07-27-2013 My R129 15 holes with 225's really are tight in there. They are closer to the strut than the original 15" 15 holes and they poke out from the rear fenders enough that they're on the border of Euro muscle and redneck. If I didn't have insanely stiff rear springs, I think the rears would occasionally rub. Try being a farmer in this kind of weather Cars coming along nicely, I always wondered why MB put such massive steerrigg wheels on these things RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-28-2013 (07-27-2013, 08:08 PM)raysorenson My R129 15 holes with 225's really are tight in there. I went ahead and did the AMG spacer kit (ala home dept nylon spacers) on the front of the trailing edge of front fender. Next time the bumper comes off I will do the back part of the leading edge. Found someone who wants to trade for 17" amg 5 spokes, PERFECT! I just run it till the governor kicks in or the idiot light turns red (1200F). In other news, I have am in negotiations on a Zender body kit: And will pick up some Borbet Type E's like these: RE: My 1987 300D - garage - 08-06-2013 Awesome. Thank you. Alternatively I could read the alternator but similar issue if the regulator pops. RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 08-08-2013 Cool. Some of the variable reluctor interface chips have dual VR inputs in case you want to expand with a 2nd speed input. NCV1124 and max9926/7 are 2 that I know of. Free samples of either are easy to get RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 08-08-2013 Picked them up for $240. Clearcoat is shot but the aluminum looks good underneath. Gonna polish and wax them. Might paint the spokes like the ones above. The before: I will post the after when I get done with them. RE: My 1987 300D - capflya - 08-08-2013 Plastidip! Then you can change the color every year if you want haha... Looking good man! RE: My 1987 300D - garage - 08-08-2013 Check out the front lip on this guys car, looks tits! I think a lip and some sideskirts would take the w124 to another level. http://www.stanceworks.com/forums/showthread.php?p=985870#post985870 RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 08-08-2013 That front lip is pretty slick. I suppose you could also saw off the bottom inch or so of a bumper and avoid looking at the tag mounting flat. That aircraft strippper is some mean stuff eating right through my thick latex gloves.... RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 08-15-2013 Good things come to those that wait. I missed out on a good deal on a spare 603.96 a month or so ago but that may have turned out to be a good thing. I am working out the details on a 603.97, lets hope its a factory replacement! RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 08-15-2013 Can you put a good head gasket on a .97? I would not trust a stock .97 HG with a built pump and more boost. I recently picked one up myself. The head gasket was leaking between cyl #1 and an oil galley. I got rid of the bottom end due to a lack of interest. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 08-19-2013 In retrospect, I've decided to hold off on it. I will wait patiently for a good deal on a 606. In other news, I have done 4!!!! coats of aircraft stripper and I still have a few to go. Whatever Borbet does for paint, it's serious. RE: My 1987 300D - anjay - 08-19-2013 As new owner of E300TD I must say that the best way to go. For years I was trying to get performance out of my 603 and I thought that I was on right path... not even close once I tried car with 606. I am not sure if all of them are like mine but this thing is all what I wanted to get from my 124. It is amazing for a diesel to pull right from dead stop and continuously keep on accelerating till flat out. So, my advise is get 606 turbo! RE: My 1987 300D - JB3 - 08-20-2013 love this build winmutt. Im psyching myself up from screwing around with 4cyls and getting to looking for power with the bigger motors. This thread is quite an inspiration |
