RE: My 1987 300D - MFSuper90 - 02-06-2014 Hx30s are effecient clear up to 35ish psi, so you wouldn't think the intake temp would rise too much since they are still in their range. Stock cummins run them between 20-30psi depending on the application of course RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-09-2014 I've got some funkiness at WOT in 4th gear. PSI goes up to 11, temp hits 1250 and then PSI starts going down and power flatlines. If I let off my foot to 3/4 boost goes back to 11 and EGT's come down but power comes back. I think the waste gate is cracking open. Will report back after some testing. I also have the overbypass valve setup so who knows. Should be pretty easy to figure out when I get some time. I think I bought the "perfect" intercooler today: It's from a 2008 BMW 335xi and measures 4-1/4 x 5 x 20-3/4. 28" with end tanks (same width as what I have now) and 3-3/16" inlet & outlet. I believe this will allow stock/amg spoiler fitment w/o issue. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-10-2014 Bypassing the overboost solenoid was def part of the problem. I saw 13psi for the first time today. I need to go back and check but that might also be the max range of the bosch boost sensor. [edit] According to this, I should be good to 3 bar... http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/Thread-EngineSystemsManagement?pid=55954#pid55954, I think I need to hook up an analog boost gauge and verify my digital. IIRC the overboost doesnt kick in until 16psi.... RE: My 1987 300D - NGARover - 02-10-2014 (02-09-2014, 05:44 PM)winmutt I've got some funkiness at WOT in 4th gear. Do I need to tell you it's okay to unhook your EGR too? RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-10-2014 (02-10-2014, 07:41 PM)NGARover Seen these? Stock E320 intercoolers... http://www.buyautoparts.com/autoparts/Mercedes_Benz/E320/Intercooler.html Looks smaller than the bmw one. I paid $45 for the one in the pic, shipped. If I don't want it, you want it? (02-10-2014, 07:42 PM)raysorenson I can't believe you still have that stuff under your hood, much less hooked up. Do I need to tell you it's okay to unhook your EGR too? Well I ran without a boost gauge for a while so better safe than sorry! Must have been leaking as well because I get more fuel earlier now. I don't know past 617 tech but I still wish there was a "Like" button for this :-p RE: My 1987 300D - dieselmeken - 02-11-2014 Feedpump pressure drop? I have been looking into these guys also.. notice that you can have them make the exact size you need to fit the area... price is reasonable also. http://bellintercoolers.com/_pages/aachart350.html RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-18-2014 (02-11-2014, 01:11 AM)dieselmeken Feedpump pressure drop? This has been my thought as well. RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 02-18-2014 The H.F. fuel injection test kit has a little bolt that will tap at the banjo fitting for lift pump pressure. Pretty easy. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-18-2014 (02-18-2014, 05:35 PM)raysorenson The H.F. fuel injection test kit has a little bolt that will tap at the banjo fitting for lift pump pressure. You wish. http://www.harborfreight.com/master-fuel-injection-pressure-test-kit-97706.html I can send you the stuff from my Mac kit if you don't want to invest. You just gotta promise to send it back when you're done. Mac stuff ain't cheap. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-20-2014 Poop. The intercooler came in today and the dolt didnt even put newspaper in there for padding. End tank broke off. The endtanks are plastic and crimped on, I dont think the aluminum metal is thick enough to weld new intakes on. This is disappointing. RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 02-20-2014 Why not A/W? I hate the idea myself, but I've resigned myself to it. If you want to compare notes, I'm going to be taking on the project with an identical car. A/C will be retained, it will be a DD in The South and appear bone stock. Fuck the SCCA. AutoX doesn't compare to tracking anyway. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 04-18-2014 Blew out third gear in the mountains today, 2hrs from home. I was able to drive home with lots of horrible noises. Luckily I have a spare .410 sitting in the garage. Time to start looking for a .414 RE: My 1987 300D - dieselmeken - 04-18-2014 Why am i not suprised? RE: My 1987 300D - willbhere4u - 04-18-2014 Time for a 6spd swap the c230 kompressor's are relatively cheap. not sure how they hold up to power yet! RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 04-18-2014 What all is needed for that swap? I am thinking 717.404 RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 05-16-2014 ASD rear diff from e300 en route.... RE: My 1987 300D - MFSuper90 - 05-16-2014 (04-18-2014, 02:01 PM)dieselmeken Why am i not suprised? ^^Lmao RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 05-16-2014 (05-16-2014, 12:19 PM)MFSuper90(04-18-2014, 02:01 PM)dieselmeken Why am i not suprised? The grin on my face, shortly before it happened was EAR to EAR. I was in some pretty decent rolling sweepers and on the last one the back end was sliding out a bit too much. About 1/2 mile down the road it went BAM. Selling the core to fellow STDer who promised to give us some tear down pics. Longest 2 hr drive of my life back with that gear getting ground up everywhere. Still looking for a 717.404. Probably won't put the ASD in until then. RE: My 1987 300D - willbhere4u - 05-16-2014 I bought a 240d that was soposed to have a bad clutch. took it for a test drive after I bought it and stuck 1 and revers gear out through the side of the case because of some sloppy linkage and the drove it to my shop 30 miles away with no fluid no 1st gear and no reverse was an interesting drive the noises coming out of that transmission where epic except 4th gear was silent as new. 1.5 hours and a spare tranny and it was fixed RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 05-19-2014 Was inserting a missing spacer between the pulley arm and timing case and found that my silicon reducer from turbo to IC piping is torn... That might explain a few things... RE: My 1987 300D - Duncansport - 05-20-2014 Have a freshly rebuilt 717.430, 9.5 inch clutch and flywheel if the price is right :-) RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 05-23-2014 Quote:10:38 am My diff is here. Still trying to track down a 717.430 I can afford. RE: My 1987 300D - MFSuper90 - 05-26-2014 (05-23-2014, 10:14 AM)winmuttQuote:10:38 am It was delivered to my hometown, except I live in the ohio version RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 05-26-2014 Today I fixed what were some apparent boost leaks due to shitty pipe clamps rubbing on silicone. We are back to scalded dog. Clutch cant hold boost in third or fourth suddenly . Ripped the ghetto fab I had for my turbo oil drain. I am seeing boost far earlier now.It is wonderful. What I am not seeing is temps going up with the bosst as much as temps going with revs. Any suggestions? RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 05-27-2014 Think there might be some valve float? Stock springs? 6000RPM? RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 05-28-2014 (05-27-2014, 10:10 PM)raysorenson Think there might be some valve float? Stock springs? 6000RPM? This is what I thought as well. Unlikely I am going to fix that on this engine. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 06-23-2014 Wanted to report that my last tank was 28.2 mpg. Not too shabby. I drive in from the burbs to the city every day and tend to get "mixed" driving out of it. Tend to run it as well so its really quite decent. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-02-2014 717.430 is on the way and looking at bringing an 87 300TD into the fold... RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-08-2014 The 717.430 is sitting on my garage floor and appears to be in good working condition. Clutch is starting to slip in all gears now so time is of the essence. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 07-22-2014 Almost done swapping this in. 2.88 ASD rear, proper 5spd DS, 717.430, clutch masters 8.5" kevlar disk. RE: My 1987 300D - JB3 - 10-16-2014 The rest of the gearbox is in surprisingly good shape. Id have to wash everything and carefully inspect all the surfaces, but i might be able to take that gear from another blown box. Question for winmutt, you were in gear when the gear blew, not shifting? I was curious about path of destruction RE: My 1987 300D - dieselmeken - 10-17-2014 (10-16-2014, 08:10 PM)JB3 The rest of the gearbox is in surprisingly good shape. Id have to wash everything and carefully inspect all the surfaces, but i might be able to take that gear from another blown box. Thats usually what superpumps do to Mercedes boxes. 2-3 pull and then third gear falls down in the bottom of the box. After3 or 4 boxes you will probably go for a BMW 530Diesel box, then your problems is over. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 10-17-2014 (10-16-2014, 08:10 PM)JB3 The rest of the gearbox is in surprisingly good shape. RE: My 1987 300D - Simpler=Better - 10-17-2014 Slap a japanese transmission in there. I want to say I saw a 240sx transmission (or a skyline...or something like that) on the floor of a shop. It was skinny and short. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-03-2014 HX35W is en route, will do a 3" exhaust when it's mounted. Been trying to figure out a more permanent solution for the bushings on the torque arms, ate through the last ones (lemforder) in 6mos, now at 1 year is totally shot. Pretty sure the chrysler LX kit from prothane shares some of the same bushings..... RE: My 1987 300D - MFSuper90 - 11-05-2014 Are the 717.430 The strongest 5 speed merc trannies? RE: My 1987 300D - capflya - 11-05-2014 Yes The .432 and I think .435 are rated for the same power. The .432 takes a dual mass FW/Clutch setup or the dual mass conversion for a sprinter I believe will work as well. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-05-2014 There was one in cali when I bought mine from a jy in KY. MBZ123 RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 11-06-2014 (11-05-2014, 02:02 PM)capflya Yes Is there some published torque capacity data behind this or is this based on past performance of these transmissions mated to high torque motors? RE: My 1987 300D - capflya - 11-06-2014 (11-06-2014, 11:12 AM)raysorenson Is there some published torque capacity data behind this or is this based on past performance of these transmissions mated to high torque motors? I read it on the internet, so it must be true? In all seriousness though these trans are used in the cars with the larger motors. I forget where I read but several places have mentioned that they're the same. The Ratios are the same between the 430 and 432, only difference is the input shaft length for the dual mass vs single mass clutch. RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 11-06-2014 Ahh.. gotcha. I was making sure there wasn't some mysterious data source I didn't know about. The .404 dogleg is also known to support turbo torque but doesn't have overdrive. RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-08-2014 At some point or another I have seen torque ratings for all the 5 speeds and sadly not recorded them appropriately. HX35W exhaust housing is now soaking to get reclocked.
